Shavings aren't really a problem, it's more the temp the thing operates at.

Had the same thing happen on my car, but I think my LSD is actually damaged from the heat. It doesn't seem to lock as well as it did before... maybe it's my brain. Or... maybe it's just the fluid that needs to be changed again. Hmm.. that happened 9k miles ago. I'll do it again soon.
