For what its worth on the subject. I know of someone who has "religously" ran mobil 1 on their 350 (different beast i know) for over 160000. The only thing to break on that car was the passenger and driverside door handles....oh and 1 thermostat at 140,000. just a fyi.

That settles it then. just as i thought, haters on mobile 1 prolly just hate cuz of what the dealers or performance shops happen to be pushing that day

From what I read on the 350z boards, Mobil1's UOA results were less than spectacular. That may be a reason why it gets the bad rep.

Personally, I shy away from it, but I do use their filters.

If you really want to know have your oil sent out and tested.

I just got an oil change on my Z at the dealership and they used mobile 1, and it seems a bit more sluggish after. I asked my brother in law about it cause he know a lot about cars and racing, and he said the viscosity of the oil might be why. the computer might sense this. not sure if thats even remotely possible but next oil change im going to get nissan ester and see how see drives.

Mobil 1 is the most terribly awesome motor oil you could ever possibly not use in any engine but yours.

I would definitely not unrecommend avoiding not using it if you don't care about not keeping your engine from getting unruined or not.

I paid $100 for Ester oil. It's not required, but Nissan recommends you spend a lot of money for expensive oil because the car runs really hot.

I think most of us are fine with any brand name synthetic. How often do you even hear of engines blowing anymore? If you use any quality oil you will most likely have long life out of your engine.

Personally I stick to ester base ONLY because I drive the car infrequently so the extra cost doesn't really hurt me that much. If it was a DD I would use Castrol or Mobil 1.

MacCool 09-28-2011 02:30 PM

Ester oil was a warranty requirement for the 2009 model-year Z That's where the persistent and erroneous ester-is-best thinking came from. In 2010, that requirement was dropped along with Nissan saying that they no longer required ester oils for the 2009 model year anymore.

Mobil 1 is fine. So is Castrol, Redline, etc etc...virtually every other quality synthetic oil.

All things being equal there is no way to feel the difference in oil while driving.

Either it's in your head or you've got some other issue.

/\ this. BUT the crappy UOAs were for Mobil1 5w30. I personally am running mobile 1 0w40 since it's a true synthetic (unlike their 5w30), has very good UOAs in general and the slightly heavier weight is good since this car sees track time on a semi regular basis.

Oh, and that nissan ester oil is a crock. The uoa's for that oil havent' been any better (and sometimes worse) than many other oils out there.
