FI or NA

would you rather have a bunch of parts on a car, like a new cai, headers, catback, pully, etc. or a forced induction system. there's alittle more pride in saying that you installed all of the N/A parts, but it can be more cost effective to install a Supercharger (not a kit, just the head and whatever other parts you may need)

Jamaica 09-04-2011 04:26 PM

More pride over having a na motor vs forced induction?

XwChriswX 09-04-2011 04:37 PM

Agreed, saying "I have 650whp with twin turbos/supercharged" is not the same as saying "I have 650whp... all motor."

But it's up to the driver what makes you happy at the end of the day.

Methodical4u 09-04-2011 06:55 PM

what would I RATHER have? Well coming from 3 turbocharged cars... i'd RATHER have the turbo. Am I satisfied with the car NA? Yes I am, and being able to achieve around a 12.5 NA with the right choice of mods IMO is quite good for an NA V6. I don't need to go any faster than that.

There comes a point of power vs. driveability when very high hp doesn't matter. I can easily break the tires loose and get sideways with just my ART pipes.

Would I ever pay for my car to have an SC or TT? Not in a MILLION friggin years! You get that bug and you are never satisfied with it... not to mention it's not just the 5 or 10 grand for the kit, but it's also the 3" exhaust that you really must have to get the most out of the kit along with perhaps other mods that I am forgetting. You will get ZERO money back if you ever sell the car.. you'll get what it's worth, but all of the money and time you put into it is just gone.

NA is satisfying for the most part. Am I satisfied with the Z NA? Yes and no. I performs pretty well out of the box. With minimal bolt-ons (I only exhaust at the moment), it can hang with a lot of higher powered cars.

FI on the other hand, is like crack. There is nothing like the feeling that you get when the turbos really kick in and throw you back in the seat. Sometimes it can be a painful road though. Like I said, it is like crack and the car may OD and require rehab.

For me, turbo all the way. I have had 2 turbo'd S13s and I am a boost junkie. I am not concerned with resale value at all. I gotta pay to play and I do not plan on selling my Z EVER. If I have to sell my Z, things have obviously taken a turn for the horrible and will be the last thing that I sell in a recovery attempt.

:iagree: I completely 100% agree with this part. If I ever have to sell my Z, it's prolly not long for me in this world. :rofl2:

Nothing like the reliability and simplicity of a NA build. But then again there's nothing like the feeling of a turbo coming up on boost or the whine of a supercharger spinning up. FI is a big step. Once you take it there's no going back. Your committed.

Alchemy 09-05-2011 09:51 AM

Unfortunatly I have never owned a turbo or supercharged car :( Would I like the current Z platform to come turbocharged? Yes, although Iam 100% satisfied with my N/A build thus far. My Zed will be staying N/A. And I, like chris and roplusbee will have to have my keys pryed from my cold dead hands.

VQStryker 09-05-2011 10:45 AM

I would have to say turbocharged, you can always expand and I get board easy.

christian370z 09-05-2011 12:52 PM

If I were ever to go FI with the Z, it would have to be supercharged. The linear and instant power delivery available at all ranges of the rev band suites the balanced character of the Z best in my opinion. My favorite form of forced induction is definitely turbo though, the feeling of coming into boost is intoxicating!

If you haven't owned one... don't even bother trying to get into it.. you are better off staying NA. Someone told me a lonnnnng time ago when I wanted to turbo an old car I had that it's better to buy something already built for a turbo than to worry about it not being able to handle it properly. I've had 3 turbo cars that came that way. They are fun... but IMO my Z has been just as fun thus far and I don't miss my old Evo's one bit. Just the AWD sometimes.

XwChriswX 09-06-2011 12:44 AM

Instead of putting your money into FI, why not look to attempting to put AWD on a Z :rofl2: Just imagine if you had say 400hp all motor, but it was AWD.

:yum: :yum:

Maybe if you want something big and bulky, you loose the compact coupness if you do that.

Power yes
AWD yes
TT yes
Better looking... ooooh, that's a toughy. :icon08:

Until you drive one... Then you know what the car is Bout instead based on word of mouth

I'm not basing on word of mouth.

Methodical4u 09-06-2011 01:47 AM

The Z would be VERY interesting with AWD, but it would also lose the whole tradition of what it has been for decades.

Agreed, not saying to change the platform, but to be one of those 'first to do...' peoples. It would be interesting to see what it could do an an AWD drivetrain.

Lots of grip with the weight of 3600lbs.

Anything can be done with money, but the Z is designed around a RWD platform and throwing on an AWD setup would most likely destroy the frame without some major improvements. The extra force from the AWD up front would cause some serious strain.

On the topic at hand, it all depends what you want. FI will provide more power at a major cost and reliability, and NA will provide quicker response, more fluid power but still can be unreliable.

Red__Zed 09-06-2011 09:28 AM

Werd. To be honest, NA power is even more unreliable than FI once you get based boltons+cams.

This. I've never owned an FI car, but talk to me in 4-5 years and I'll let you know how the TT on the GT-R is  :driving:

I don't think one can say that for certain, as it depends on the car, the engine, the driver, the oil, etc etc etc. If that were the case, maybe the RX-7's wouldn't have had so many issues with their turbos with all of the heat affecting them at higher mileages.

Within the constraint of the same engine, obviously. For the sake of this discussion, my statement is correct.

If you're talking hyper-aggressive cams/tune and itb's, you aren't even putting down sc power, and have reliability worse than a Yugo.

blackonorange 09-06-2011 12:12 PM

Lol Yugos suck

more parts also are going to be under more strain as well.. if the motor isn't built for FI, it's going to have more issues... not to mention there are just more parts present that can break as well.

christian370z 09-06-2011 04:44 PM

Start with stuffing an AWD G37 setup into the Z, then go FI. I bet it is not as hard as one might think and you can find salvage G37s for $10,000. Including bolting on a TT kit, it will probably be a $30,000 project in the end. While the GTR is built to accommodate FI from the get go, I don't think it looks as nice as the Z and it is too undramatic based from my rides in one as well as driving a Cobb tuned '09 GTR.
