Oil change intervals
New 370 roadster owner. I am told by the dealership that Nissan requires the oil to be changed at 6000 km &/or 3months. This supposedly with their ester oil at about 150 Cdn $ each time. I just came from a Porsche where the change interval was one year or 24000 km-the longest I went in 12months was15000 km, had the oil analyzed as always, and the oil was healthy. Why this short interval required by Nissan other than to make the dealer a boatload of money? Thanks for any responses.

oil = dirty = change it!
|
Warranty considerations are why I would be concerned by not adhering the their schedule.
|
what is nissan's statement for changing oil. is the mileage 3750 or is it 3000?
|
|
In the manual there is a 3 month (normal duty) and a 6 month (light duty) service schedule. If you use the car as a daily driver (normal duty) you are going to be changing oil often.
Also remember that you should be using ester oil to best protect the valve train. |
Got hold of a lady at Nissan Canada.....the 3 month 6000 km is reccomended only.....the 6 month 12000 km pol change is required for warranty purposes. I've been getting my oil analyzed for years at Blackstone and will continue with my 370. Very much enjoy this car.

The manual says 3750 but everytime I go to the dealer they always put it at 3000. Maybe they just want to cash in sooner on customers. I know Toyota dealers say all their new cars is 5k mile oil change
|
The Nissan lady I spoke with said it is in the books that come with vehicle.

Changing Oil
I have had my car for 11 months and have only 2200 miles. I was wondering when should I perform my first oil change since I don't drive the car that much.

It's probably not absolutely necessary yet, but I would go ahead and change the oil.
Random guy on the internet says the break-in process deposits tiny metal bits into your oil more than normal driving after the 1200 miles is done. Lots of people change their oil around 1500 to clean out all these bits. I'm pretty sure a Blackstone UOA will confirm this kind of thinking. FWIW, I don't think I got to change mine until closer to 3K miles. 53K miles later and no worries :driving: |
I change my car oil every 12 months or 3,000 miles, whichever one happens first.
I drive it like I stole it, but pamper it like I owe on it |
I do mine every 6 months as I only average 5k a year.
|
Wow do you hate driving your Z's?
Im amazed how low your mileage are. I cant stop driving my Z every weekends except if its raining. Anyway back to topic i change mine at 4k miles or every 6 months. Redline synthetic 5w/30 |
Daily driver Z here. I've had it three weeks and have put 3000 miles on it.
|
All oils start deteriorating as soon as you start using them. When the engine is running the oil gets polluted with acids, water, and other junk. Unless you have temperature-controlled storage, the engine will "breathe" and more moisture will collect. All that crap sits there and eats away at your oil and engine. After 2200 miles, the oil is probably still doing an adequate job of lubricating, even after 11 months, but it needs to be flushed to get rid of the garbage.
And I agree with the others that the first oil change should be done very early (1500-2500 miles). As pointed out, there will be a lot of junk floating around from break-in. |

I use mine as a daily driver year around. 37k miles on it. Change the oil every 3,750 miles or three months whiich ever comes first. I don't believe in garage ornaments. Have some fun, drive it!
|
Every 4k miles or so. If I am lazy, perhaps 5K miles.
|
6 to 7k for me. I pay for synth, I'm going to get the benefits from it.

Change Based on oil used---
Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec Edge at 15K Amsoil at 25K I DD 50 miles, use to be 105 a day. SC for 38K miles with a 25 row Oil Cooler. 56K on car right now. NO Problems, I drive the car hard each day. 5-7 PSI of boost 2 to 5 times each way. No WOT longer than 3-5 seconds in 2nd/3rd gear, any longer would be to extreme on the street. I do not track. When I did SCCA would change after 3 events, 20 years ago, not in the Z! Note: Castrol Syntec Edge, I got some on my hands and it took 3 days to get it off. Same weekend I also did Mobil 1 in my wife's car and it washed right off. |
I just did an oil analysis with Blackstone Labs and at 5,000 miles the tech said I could extend to 7,000 on 5w30 royal purple. I do have a z1 25 row oil cooler so I'm sure that contributes to longer oil life.

If so use those with the Ester oil and then go to a synthetic of your choice. I'm currently at 348,xxx kms with Redline...for what it's worth. |
Not wanting to open a new thread, kind of high jacking this one. Owner manual for my 2013 says oil needs to be changed at 3750mi or every 3mo. I believe in 2014 the oil chenge interval was changed to 5K miles. Heres the question: does this mean that by nissan recommendations i can now change my oil at 5K or does that only apply to 2014+ models on? Flame ready with my suit on guys, but please take it easy :ugh2:

If you want to be sure that you're ok to increase your OCI, then get an oil analysis from Blackstone. They will analyze the contents of the oil and let you know if you should change your change interval :twocents: |

Money is not a concern and Im actually very OCD about these things and like to follow service manual recommendations. That being said, if this was ok by Nissan standards, which im still womdering if it is or not, then i would not hesitate on making the change. However, you have a valid point regarding the oil analysis, so i think i will look into that too. Thanks again. |
Nissan's OCIs are very conservative for modern lubes. If not worried about the warranty, 5k (or longer in some cases) will work great for most DDs. If you drive hard and/or live in a hot climate, you might want to go with more frequent changes, but modern lubes are pretty damn tough.
If you're that OCD about it, Jar's UOA suggestion is the way to go. Overkill for a DD (unless you suspect abnormal wear, eg, an older, high-milage engine), IMNSHO, but if you helps you sleep at night, why not? |
