Oil temp questions

I went out today for a bit to run some errands, the temp today is 90 degrees and sunny. I know that people with the 370 have oil temp issues, but I thought I would ask after doing a search for what "normal" oil temps are, I found a bunch of different answers.

I will put it this way... most of the driving was on back roads at 50 mph, and some town driving... even on the 50 mph roads with the cruise on the car was running about 210 degrees.

When I got back I called my local dealer and I told them about the airbag light not going off when my Fiancee gets in the car, and that the oil temps seemed very high for the kind of driving I was doing. I mean I didn't even go over 3k rpms... it's a little ridiculous. I said " I guess you all will have to put another oil cooler in the car or something because i'm not paying for an aftermarket one.

I am almost willing to bet they blame it on the car not being broken in... either way though, what is "normal" for our cars?

I have an appointment on Tuesday to have it looked at.

210 is totally normal for average operating conditions given current MD weather.

210. Just be glad it's not 215. Kidding. Your more than fine. I run 215 around town with an oil cooler at those temps.

oh ok cool... I just figured without getting on the car or anything 210 seemed a bit high.

After my morning commute (~80 degrees out) oil temp is ~225. You really have nothing to worry about there.

The airbag thing is pretty weird though...

Ok all, went out to run some errands again today. 90-95 degrees (car said 95, phone said 90) and NORMAL driving... no getting on it at all... driving the speed limit everywhere 30-55 a lot of backroad driving. Oil temp 220 degrees. That seems quite excessive for this kind of driving IMO.

Going to email Nissan right now.

Again, totally normal. Don't waste your time fretting about it. 220 is a temp we've all seen in warm weather.

The 370Z has an engine protection system that reduces peak engine speeds when the oil temperature exceeds recommended levels in order to protect against possible engine damage. Aggressive driving of the 370Z on a race track at sustained high engine speeds can cause increases in oil temperature and may activate this engine protection system. To avoid activation of this engine protection system and these reduced peak engine speeds, Nissan recommends an oil cooler be fitted to the 370Z before driving it on a race track. A Nissan Motorsports accessory oil cooler kit is available for customer purchase through authorized Nissan dealerships for race track use. The part number is 21300-SS370.

An oil cooler is not necessary for normal operation of the vehicle on public roads. The addition of an oil cooler would have raised the price of the car and potentially moved it out of the reach of some customers. Value has been a core principle of the Z car since the original 240Z and we choose to uphold this core principle by not adding additional costs that are unnecessary for normal use. For those individuals who choose to drive their vehicle on a race track, the oil cooler is available as an aftersales item.

The oil cooler is a Nissan Motorsports item and as such is sold without warranty, express or implied, unless expressly prohibited by law in which case the warranty provided is the minimum required by law. The installation of the Nissan Motorsports oil cooler does not, by itself, “void” the vehicle warranty. However any damage caused by the installation or use of this part is expressly excluded under the terms of the Nissan New Vehicle Limited warranty.
That is the response you will get.
Honestly, if you start seeing 240-250 under those driving conditions then you might have something to say, but 220 is completely normal.

Methodical4u 07-07-2011 05:19 PM

so do those who run synthetic seem to have lower temperatures?

Red__Zed 07-07-2011 05:27 PM

I see slightly lower temps (~10*) with German castrol vs ester oil.

SPOHN 07-07-2011 05:44 PM

Just for info sake I was just running oil temps of 200 at 94 degrees in stop and go traffic. That's with a 34 row cooler.

Edit. I forgot to mention I still have my block off plate on. It's covering about 3 inches still. I really could remove it completly with these temps where having. Reason being is in the mornings it's still about 75 degrees and my oil temps only hit about 170

Hmmmm, that just seems really high... is that what your typical car runs? My last 2 Evo's didn't have an oil temp gauge (I don't know why... seems kind of stupid to me for a turbo'd car) so I don't have any old cars to compare it to.

What would you feel to be a 'comfortable' range then?
