Hmm oil change ASAP or wait for filter?
 

So I have approached my oil change mileage ( 60 miles over it actually) and can go to the local stealership for the change anytime this week. Here is my question: I was going to order the K&N Performance oil filter and have them install it with the change. That being said, if I order today it won't be here for another couple of days. So is it bad to be driving it a hundred or so miles past the due mileage, or is it worth waiting for the oil filter before taking it to get changed?
Also, I understand I can change it myself. However, I have never changed my own oil in past cars and am not sure the Z is a good one to start with. They were all free so I never bothered.

I just use the factory filter. No issue.

Just pick one and go for it. You'll never notice any difference. Some things are much too over thought...we're not racing in the 24hrs of Le Mans here.

Pick a quality one and go with it, IMHO, if you want to keep your engine in top shape for a long long time. And with all the rebranding and ******** claims on the boxes, it's not obvious to the consumer which ones are quality. Mobil1, PureOne, Wix / NAPA Gold, K&N, all seem to be in the top contender category (or if you buy the linked newer results, also Royal Purple and AmSoil (which is probably Wix media)). I'd be especially wary of any model that had a shitty or faulty anti-drainback valve.

Lets see, 150K of Honda OEM filters on the GS-R (saw track time)
110K of OEM filters on the NA6 Miata (including 70K of 12 PSI FM II goodness)
110K (and counting) of OEM filters on the Stage 2 WRX

3.5K and counting of OEM filters on the Z Roadster

Amount of time spend worrying about oil filter quality on my cars: 5 minutes.
Amount of time spent driving instead of thinking about oil filters...

same here. the best combination ever.

I've been running K&N and Redline since I bought it. I agree with the others, don't worry about going a little over the mileage.

FYI, if you have an Autozone around you, you can check to see if they sell the K&N filter. The one around me does. They also have Purolator filters as well.

no expert here but going over some of the mileage won't do a thing....
in fact I'm overdue by about 500 miles..........

as far as the filter goes imho if its a new one........ theirs not a hairs difference between the top 5... in fact i doubt anyone could tell the difference.......

that being said mobil 1 and filter...... 24,000 miles doesn't burn a drop of oil.

Yup, what everyone else has said...I use K&N (#HP-1008) even with a Stillen oil cooler. Seals properly and works well. It's slightly bigger in diameter compared to the OEM one.

If you have the inclination to do your own oil change, the Z is quite easy to learn on. The oil filter and drain plug are close to each other, so drain pan placement is good with minimal mess. The only tedious part is removing the 16 bolts that hold the under tray in place. Just find and follow AK's DIY and it's a piece of cake. You'll need to buy a copper crush washer for the drain plug (never reuse an old one). :tup:
