Stalling the 7AT
So last night, I was driving home around 1AM. There were no cars on the road, so I figured I have some fun. I turned off traction control, put it in M mode and decided I was gonna drift the car, as I turned right, at the four way intersection. I was coming at it in 2 gear, went side ways and started sliding. Now, during this slide, I guess I was having too much fun? that I forgot to take my foot off the gas... So I spun out of control and was doing doing doughnuts in the middle of the road. After the 2nd circle, I tried to correct the car, and drive off. But EVERYTHING just turned off on me and my z started rolling backwards into the median. I freaked out and pulled the E brake. Put the car into Neutral and tired to start the car again.. it did not work. So I put it in park and got out of the car to see if I hit anything. Got back in the car and tried to start it.. it worked normal again. I drove it to school this morning and everything was fine.
Can anyone tell me WHAT happened and should I be worried about it? Hope what I wrote was clear enough for you guys to understand what happened. |

Maybe something got stuck to your air filter and stopped the flow of air to your engine? |
I don't track my Z (Auto X or Road Race) but I have heard the Z can get fuel starvation from hard cornering or in heavy transitions. How much fuel did you have in the car when doing this?
I drift my Z from time to time. 2nd and 3rd seem to be the best gears to do it in with the 7AT. In 2nd I don’t have to throttle the gas much once it breaks loose I roll on the throttle in 2nd. Easy to drift in this gear since it’s so short. Once you get the hang of drifting in 2nd you can try 3rd. It takes more practice speed and balls to do it in 3rd but once you successfully pull on Godzilla drift its hard to wipe off the $hitty grin from your face. Just practice in a empty parking lot or a road without nasty ditches or curbs. |
It was your Z's way of telling you that the 7A was made for people who want a nice looking car but dont want to drive it....A 6M would have kept going ;)

How much fuel in the car?
|
Your lucky no one saw you, they should have smacked you upside your head when you got out of your car. Clearly you don't know wtf you are doing and if a car or pedestrian had shown up while you were out of control you were incapable of doing anything to stay out of harms way. Go to a track or an empty parking lot that way the only person who gets hurt when you screw up again is you.

:shakes head: Lets just lock this thread. Oh and next time maybe just tell us you did a dougnut in a empty lot and this happen. Not that you where drifing on the street lost control and almost hit something. ok?

Dude. That is just... what the fvck are you doing? It's a public road. It doesn't matter if it's 1 AM. Come on... you're either going to wreck your car, kill yourself or kill someone else. Do that sh!t in an empty parking lot or something... or better yet, not at all. Jeez. Quote:
Now go hit yourself in the face with a shovel and never do that again. Practice the Initial D sh!t off of public roads. Christ! :icon14: |
Where in Tallahassee did you this ? Pensacola street? Tennessee? Appleyard?
|
I had a quarter of a tank left, and the fuel might be a good reason why it happened. Thank you to everyone for the help. Trust me, the last thing I want to is wreck my car and or worst.. hurt someone. I've always played around in empty park lots.. spinning out and stuff and never had problems. But I don't know what I was thinking that night.

Do you live in town? I saw a white 370z today as I was pulling into the gun shop on capital circle by the I-10 |
^^^ Probably fuel starvation then. Should be okay.
Take it easy out there, Bunta :icon17: |

Side note, I had an old Mustang King Cobra. Heavily modified engine and suspension. One day I was going home in the hills of West Virginia when I decided to have a little fun on an empty road. There was a sight switchback. I came out of the first curve just fine and set up for the second when pffffft she dies...no power steering or brakes. Last time I did that trick. |

However, after talking to many other 350z/G35 drifters, they said this is just an emergency shut off the car will perform, even if the TCS or VDC is turned off. There is nothing wrong with your Z. In fact, I tried restarting it and it would go, until I put the car in park, shut it completely off, and then restarted it.. Doesn't happen with a lot of manual drivers because we can depress the clutch, just like in my new 370z. It's more of an automatic thing. That's why. Just a safety feature. |
I probably even have a video of it happening too on the track, if I come across it, I'll send it to you.

He can drive how ever he wants, calm down guys. FREE COUNTRY

And going forward down a road is for pansies :stirthepot: |
Just a question but don't automatic transmissions the engine shut down because too low rpm as the wheels come to a stop and start going reverse and the transmission disengages in a spin?
I just remember a few Top Gear episodes and other videos where they are testing a car with an auto and spin it out and then show them restarting the car. |
It is possible and quite easy to stall the 7AT. Easiest way is to be on a hill, have the car in neutral, left off the brake and while rolling back switch it into drive. It will kill it everytime. Not saying this is what happened to you, just saying that its surprisingly not hard to kill it.
I learned this by putting my car in neutral to roll back out of the garage instead of reverse. First time I did it I was like wtf?! |
I would say it was his torque converter that stalled his engine when he began to roll backwards.
