Tracking the car, Oil cooler questions
Hi all,
I'm having the short block replacement done next week, so I thought I would have the Z1 oil cooler installed at the same time being that I intend to start taking the car to the track when the weather breaks. With my current short block my temps sit around 230 with some spirited driving. Should I expect that to change once the shorty is done or will it still be an issue. I have a few questions I need answers to. 1) How many of you track your car without the cooler and what were your temps? 2)How many of you track your car with the cooler and what were your temps? 3) My dealer is telling me that I should be fine without it. Is he correct? 4) In my situation meaning that the engine is getting pulled, how long should the cooler install take. Thank you in advance and kindest regards, Tom |

2. All depends on ambient temp? on avg 20-25 degree drop in temp for me on a GTM Comp 34 row oil cooler 3. You're dealers kinda right if you're doing one lap, and the day is cool? other than that a cooler is a must 4. 1hr to 1 1/2hr |
My experiences with a Stillen 25 row oil cooler custom mounted to the driver's side:
1) Same as Triple's, I ran the car in canyon driving without a cooler in hot ambient temperatures and got very close to 280 degrees and I wasn't pushing the car super hard. 2) With the cooler, I saw 30-40 degree drop in temperature everywhere, especially when pushing the car to its max. Pushing the car hard, I saw a 60 degree drop in oil temperatures and the car never goes past 220 degrees now. 3) You need a cooler, don't even listen to the dealer. 4) It should be an hour and a half most like since they have to drill the two holes in the plastic fairing. Other than that, it is just a matter of connecting lines and bolting on the cooler and sandwich adapter. |
Thank you for the info. Looks like I will be installing an oil cooler after all!
Kindest regards, Tom |
I am running off memory here, but I recall the car started to creep over 250F with a 25R oil cooler after 3 hard laps at VIR (shifts at redline). When I took it easy, it steadied around 220-240F. That was at 70-80F weather

I have had nothing but great results with the AE kit. I pushed it as hard as could, and the kit just out right worked great.

I just hit 220 in 55 degree weather in stop and go traffic. So I also just ordered a GTM 34 row oil cooler. Be perfect for the GA summers.

yeah i would hit 220-250 just driving around. put in the biggest z1 cooler i could get and at the track i didnt go above 210 that i remember seeing.

I'm glad I didn't order mine yet, I was going to get th Z1 25 row but it looks like I will need the 34 row.
Thanks again guys! |
Get a block off plate for the oil cooler, oil will have a hard time to come up to temperature

Get a block off plate made, I regret for not doing it. I have a 25R and I have a tough time getting it up past 180F as soon as I get on the highway.
