Is this right? - Mishimoto Racing Thermostat

Hi everyone,

I was looking into the Mishimoto Racing Thermostat and pretty much every vendor and place I've looked around has this part around the same price...

~$65 shipped..

So, the thing is, I went to eBay and found this item listed. Seller has a very good reputation, even marked as a Top-rated Seller. Does this smell fishy or is it just an awesome deal?

man thats an awesome deal.... idk though man.... everything these days are expensive... anything cheap or "to good to be true" usually is.... i say spend the extra 20 bucks and get one from one of our supporting vendors here because if that thermostat messes up or gets stuck in the closed position a blown head gasket is more expensive that the 20 bucks you save  just my two cents....

Is there actually any benefit to this thermostat? This thread prompted me to search around but nothing really came up.

There's really no need to run a colder thermostat. Maybe if you were tracking it and datalogged water temps were always on the hot side of normal, but totally not needed for a DD.

The only thing this thermostat does is allow the coolant to flow at a lower starting temperature...

Stock is 82°C (180°F) and the Mishimoto opens up at around 66°C (150°F)..

yeah i dont know how much it would help for the track. i would assume that on the track whether you have a 160 or a 180 its gonna be fully open

if anything this woul dbe good for DD where you may not get to 180 for it to fully open or something.

It also throws a CEL. Just an FYI. The CEL is a sign that the car isn't getting up to 180 degrees which might put the car into constant warm-up mode in which it might run rich trying to build up heat so it might not be a good idea.

Aside from that, in theory, it does work well for the track though, but it all depends on how efficient your cooling system is. Until your thermostat opens, your car's cooling system is not working at 100% efficiency since it is blocking flow to the radiator. Just for the sake of simplicity I will use round numbers. Say your radiator is efficient enough to keep temperatures in check enough to see a maximum gain in water temp of 10% above the temperature in which your thermostat opens under racing conditions. If your thermostat opens at 180 degrees your max temp would be 198 degrees. If your thermostat opens at 160 degrees then your max temp would be 176 degrees.
