Cold starts : engine / exhaust sound
How does everyone else's 370 sound on the first cold start? Mine sounds extremely loud, like an amplified V8 hollow rumble - more from the front of the car rather than the rear muffler. Lasts for about 15 - 20secs then as the revs drop it's extremely quiet. Is that normal or consistent with other 370's?

Mine does the same thing. I think it just takes her a minute to wake up and get going.
Actually I think it has more to do with the ecu getting adjusted when she first starts. |
It's very normal. On a cold start the ECU is programmed for a high-idle to get fluids pumping and the engine warmed up. Enjoy it. :D

Yeah cold starts are unusually loud on this car, nothing to worry about.
|
i concur. loud and rough!
|
Loud, pfht mine is dead silent.
Long tube headers with 12" resonators, dead quiet. :p |
I wish it was COLD every morning :D I like how the sound is even louder in the Garage :) "Tell my neighbors its time to WAKE UP"
|
the gf's g37 is louder than my Z on cold starts
|
Mine at first is very quite, then it starts to do like a pouring sound after, you can hear like a miooooouuuuuuuuu sound all day!
|
I love cold starts on this car; I wish it sounded like that all the time, really deep and burly.
|
same here loud at start up then settles down in about 10 sec.
|
Ok cool, sounds like most people are on the same boat - must be normal then. Thought it might have been loose flanges or leaking gaskets at first.

. Mine does the same thing - sounds like an exhaust leak near the rear of the engine (I haven't been able to pinpoint exact location, so that may be way off) until fast idle starts backing down.
. OK. I'll believe that it's normal, but what causes it? Is there a simple and easy way to make it quieter? |
When I had the Berk HFC with the TDX 12", it was like waking up an angry bear every morning and after work. It rattles the garage door, window, and loose objects.

90% of HC emissions is at startup. Cold engine = poor atomization of the fuel which goes right out the tailpipe. The VVEL does its thing to prevent unburnt HC's from going out the tailpipe and warm the engine and cat convertor quickly to reduce HC output.
"Cleaner emissions Intake-valve timing is optimized on startup, when the engine is still cool, to quickly raise the temperature of exhaust gases and more quickly activate the catalytic converter. Hydro-carbon emissions are reduced in the low-to-medium range by keeping intake-valve lift low, speeding intake flow and dispersing the fuel into a finer mist, resulting in more efficient full combustion." |
