Did my first oil change to synthetic...noticeable difference.

So I reached 3000 miles on my 2010 370z and finally decided to change out the factory oil. The oil was really dark. I put in 5 quarts of Penziol Ultra Full Synthetic. I noticed that the car felt smoother and idled quieter. Before, I could feel the shifter vibrating in my hands, but now the car just felt right. I was not expecting so much difference from just an oil change.

Do you know if Synthetic oils are more recommended for 370z than a Ester oil?

blastman5 09-18-2010 03:51 AM

i was told that an ester oil is basically a better version of a synthetic oil and it is basically more lubricating to help keep down engine noise and wear and tear....but this is what the nissan tech told me and they usually dont know what their talking bout

I believe that ester oil is just a hype that the dealership is trying to push on z owners. They do want the profit.

:iagree:

I've been running the non-ester oil for the last two changes and I don't notice ANY difference.
Mobil 1 has Ester components and is a whole lot cheaper. I can buy a 5 liter jug at Autozone for just over 30 bucks.

The oil that comes with the car may as well have sand in it. After my initial oil change at 1315 miles the car ran much, MUCH smoother. The replacement oil was Nissan Ester Oil though. I'll switch to synthetic eventually, but I don't think the reduction in engine NVH after the initial oil change can be attributed to the type of replacement oil.

Walmart has the same jug for about $25, just an FYI.

It's not necessarily the oil. It's the wear metals... :)

Would filling up a sub 3,000 mile car with a quality synthetic oil such as Redline have any detrimental effects on the engine? I have seen warnings on a few synthetic oils saying not to use them in an engine that has less than 3,000 miles on it.

Seems like there are a few schools of thought on that. Some believe dino oil for the first few changes is best, to let everything "seal" up properly, while some think these engines are built with such tight specs from the factory, that it doesn't matter.

I plan on doing a total of 3 dino changes, then I'll switch to a syn. No real reason behind it. lol

Changed to German Castrol on my 2nd oil change on my STI. 48,000 on it now. Doesn't use a drop. Changed to synthetic on the Z on the third change. (changed out at 1000, then 2500) No noticable use so far. RP

why dont u just use Mobil1 (silver cap) for your 3K mile since it's not a full pure synthetic like the high-end german castrol? i did mine last month no clicking no issues.

Most of the best synthetic oils are partially or completely Ester-based. Check out Motul 300V Power Racing 5W-30, Eneos, etc.

Ester oil is not a gimmick, but not using it does not mean you lose all your durability. For the DLC coated valvetrain though, I'm sticking to the Ester oils. To each his own.

Amsoil dealer or not, you guys are buying ester oil for the wrong reason. Nissan made everybody think you need ester oil, when in fact you are really after the nanoparticles formulated in their own brand. Obviously, replacing Nissan's fill with another ester based oil because Nissan recommends it, is wrong simply because you are missing those nanoparticles. People running non-ester basestock oils, including myself, have no issues with increased valvetrain noise, etc.

Please don't think I'm here telling you what to buy, but I have kept my mouth shut on this misconception for too long.

I have been researching bobistheoilguy and I have yet to see a oil analysis for Redline 5w30 that has been anything short of great, many members here run it. Some other good options are Mobil 1 and a less common one that I have heard good things about is Shell Rotella 5w40.
