Silly little question for Auto Guys

This is not meant to upset the die hard manual crowd.

When i bought my 370 i thought i would use the paddle shifters more.
But i find myself using the stick shift more when i'm in manual mode.

Just wondering about what the other guys are into.:driving:

Paddles 90% of the time.

I tend to use the paddles more because when I try to use the shifter in manual, I find it would have been better the pull back to upshift, and push forward to downshift... Well Nissan doesn't agree with me, so usually what happens is I'll get goin, and pull back on it causing a massive lurch forward lol followed by a string of obsenities from me :bowrofl:

Yea Chris, I find that my bimmer had the same setup minus Paddle, in reverse, and now trying to relearn it again makes it a little getting used to, so I said screw that! I'll paddle shift instead.

i quite agree with this sentence, i hate how all manufacturers do it differently. tempted just to open it up and swap the wires around =_=. wondering if its possible and how easy it would be.

shumby 09-12-2010 06:34 PM

paddles. by there is a thread on which wires to swap for the guys that want to reverice the way the shifter works.

PapoZalsa 09-12-2010 09:16 PM

I will said one of two, paddles or shifter should be installed for "manual" driving by the factory.

I thought the same thing. I think I only used the paddle shifter once or twice just to check them out.

Almost always paddles. I have long arms ;) and the position of the stick isn't comfortable.

shadoquad 09-13-2010 08:50 AM

I use that strange knob in the middle that requires my left leg to hit an otherwise unoccupied pedal with timing. For some reason, when I don't, the car just stays still and revs.

cptspeed 09-13-2010 08:51 AM

Took a while to get used to the stick. I use the paddles when I need both hands on the wheel though. I only use auto mode in garages.

I drive the manuel, and always pull towards me to down shift into second so this seems natural, I agree with Nissan. I am always going through second unlike fourth and up. Yes I push forward to down shift into third from fourth but fourth is a far less used. Maybe it is because a manuel stick tells you what gear it is in by feel.

I disagree with you as well. pushing the stick forward is like up and pulling it back would be like down so it makes sense to me.

I use both but trying to use the paddles more since I found out pushing the stick forward when in auto mode is not a good thing...:shakes head:

I've done this a 100 times. It's embarrassing :)

I use the Flappy Paddles

I do a mix. I find when I pull out and make a 90 degree turn onto the highway, I want to shift up before the steering wheel returns unless I'm really being aggressive - even then, I think I can get pretty close to redline before the paddles are easily reached.

So, I tend to hit the stick for 1-2 those times, and use the paddles the rest of the times.

Though I wish the paddles were a little softer to use, and a positioned a little better for my (ingrained now) 9 and 2 driving position. At 10 and 2 I would think both paddles are a bit of a reach. The Ferrari's look like they have their paddles setup to reach 10 and 2, and the F1 cars turn with the wheel.

Any help on finding that thread? I'd really like to do this but after trying multiple searches here and in the DIY section I can't find anything about it.

wilsonp 09-14-2010 05:54 PM

I found a thread on the G35 - you just need the wiring diagram for the 370Z:

G35 Automatic Shifter Modification : Infiniti Articles

Looking in the hard to read ;) service manual, looks like connector M137, pins 1 & 3 should be reversed. M137 is apparently the control device harness connector.

axeman71 09-14-2010 07:26 PM

thanks, this will make a good project for this weekend.

axeman71 10-01-2010 09:50 PM

Hey WilsonP, I should finally have time to do this this weekend. I downloaded the 2009 service manual (I cant find a '10 but there really shouldn't be any difference) and though it's hard for me to follow I think I should switch pins 2 and 3 not pins 1 and 3. Do you agree? I'm basing this on page 241 of the TM chapter.

I just base it off of how whenever you see someone in a movie (I know hollywood, but still and NO I'm not talking about any F&F movie :rofl2: ) that whenever you see them slam it down into gear its always pulling it towards them from a passenger floorboard angle looking up at the driver... So I always see that playing in my mind when I get on the gas lol :icon17:
