oil cooler install (pressure drop)

Hi guys, is there an oil pressure drop after installing an oil cooler? if ever the answer is yes, can our engine handle it? is it safe for the engine?

No, Signicant drop in pressure! and Oil Cooler's are safe as long as they are Installed Properly. :tiphat:

If anything, I would be worried about overcooling. In 65 temp, I can only get up to 160 cruising

Which is why you should consider an oil cooler kit with a thermostatic sandwich plate, which will bypass the cooler until the oil temperature reaches 180 degrees (well begins to open at 160 degrees and is fully open by 180).

STILLEN : STILLEN Oil Cooler Kit

i live in manila so it's basically pretty hot here all the time. hehe
i have an hks oil cooler. the one mounted inside the driver side fender. the cooler is mounted sideways. reference pics =>

the problem is that after the install, the engine automatically switches into limp mode detecting something wrong in the system. rpm is limited to 3.5k. we also disconnected the battery for a reset. got scared and just removed it for the mean time and everything was back to normal.

what can be the problem? something clogged inside the hose? improper install? do we need to fill the cooler first with oil before connecting it to the sandwich plate? bent hose? wrong mounting on the sandwich plate (because there are 5 holes to choose from)? pls do give opinions.

already have one, oil cooler is too big for daily driving, i need a block off plate. My rough oil temp at highway cruising is 85-95 over ambient temp.

You may want a qualified Mechanic to check it out or the dealer? if you followed the cooler instructions carefully you may another problem. How hot is your oil temp? and what is the ambiet temperature?

city driving 220F
ambient temp around 90 to 95F

and nissan here doesn't sell 370z's. i got mine imported from U.S.

we'll double check everything tom and maybe install an oil press gauge for safety.

please give tips and suggestions. =)

I might suggest trying a Cooler that mounts in front of the radiator, so the air hits it directly, also try to turn on your AC, it helps to bring down the temps sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. :tiphat:

actually i ordered a front mount but the one inside the fender arrived. i need to use it lol. it comes with a housing that directs air anyways so it's ok.

What was the Problem?

budz 07-05-2010 11:43 AM

sandwich plate. wrong mounting. actually it's correct too but the setting that got it to work is more efficient. it's a smart car. hehe
