7AT Shifting And Rolling Into Neutral
 

When I bought the car, it was the only japanese car on a chevy dealership... Plus they gave me an amazing trade in for my honda. Since the shifting is amazing in the 7AT, I decided it would be more practical(Girlfriend drives if I am drunk:roflpuke2:) to DD a AT. So please don't start spamming "Why didn't you just get a MT.

So the question is... sometimes when I am driving around town, I like the feeling of shifting myself. But there are a **** LOAD of red lights in Tallahassee. And sometimes I would shift up, but if I see a red light, I would put the car into Neutral and let it roll to a stop. And then put it back into shift when it turns green. I've been doing this for about a month now, and I don't see any problems with it. Another thing is, sometimes I miss judge and light turns green before I come to a compete stop, I put it back into shift mode(feel a slight lag).But do any of you guys know if this would be bad for my transmission later on down the road?

I wan't to keep my car as clean as possible so I can go GTM's TT in the future.

There's no problem in doing that. It's also good to do at the red lights, less strain on the soul-train.... i mean drive-train

It can cause damage to the transmission if you should shift it back into gear at a high rpm. It's pretty safe to shift out of gear and into neutral but you really shouldn't shift it back into gear without stopping. I would keep it in gear and just play around with engine braking (downshifting) instead of shifting into neutral if you want more of a manual feel. I'm not 100% sure if the computer steps in (lag) to prevent damage but it's possible.

Personally, I wouldn't do it. Because you are out of gear, you have reduced braking abilities (slightly) and also you actually use more gas.
I got into this discussion a couple of years ago on another forum and one member pointed me to an engine component that I was unaware of at the time.

Of course, I can't remember what it is called, but when you are coasting in gear, it actually cuts off your fuel, when you are out of gear, you're still using fuel.

I know I sound vague, but I can't remember the name of the engine component to save me.

To the OP, I think it's safe, as there's no lock out from gear to neutral, but I'd check with a Nissan tech or someone more likley to be very familar with the trans to make sure it isn't increasing wear.

If under load and you throttle off, the injectors cut the fuel, which is called deceleration enleanment. If you wanted to keep the revs up and are able to add some fueling on decel (you probably can with Osirus or similar) you can maintain higher revs off throttle, but at the cost of poorer fuel economy.

There's generally some sort of dashpot function in the ECU that tracks changes in RPM and load to restart fueling for a soft landing to idle :D

I notice on the 7AT, the ECU will also adjust fueling and throttle to revmatch and downshift on coast down as you approach idle. Feels a bit herky-jerky to me sometimes (kind of wish it would just hold the gear)...

I would just recommend that you leave it in drive and shift it into manual mode when you're not in traffic.
Just feather the throttle lightly in traffic and try to coast as much as possible.

Better to be safe than sorry and have a $8K transmission bill on your hands after the warranty expires.

PS: I meant shifting into neutral but shiftng back into gear while stopped.

I do this once in a while too, I don't know if its bad for the transmission but I don't think so.

Its not bad to go to neutral while moving in a MT and I don't hear odd noises or feel odd movements so I think its fine
