Knock from the clutch pedal

Yesterday I was out with my son and started hearing and feeling a knock from the clutch pedal when releasing it. I had planned to take it in to the dealer but today I drove it and there was no more knock. Very strange but has anyone had a similar problem?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update: Today my car came home with a new clutch pedal assembly. It seems much smoother than before and no noise. Time will tell if it will last but for now, it's fixed.

brakedrift12 06-14-2010 01:17 AM

it happens... time to time :)

what a loud noise car it is!!!

Soygen 06-14-2010 03:23 PM

I feel different shakes, bumps, vibrations, knocks and rattles all the time with the clutch and shifter. Never really bad, but you feel it. It's not very refined, nor is it supposed to be I guess.

WShade 06-14-2010 03:26 PM

All normal and inherently Nissan. :tiphat:

NCSUPACK09 06-14-2010 03:49 PM

It happened to me before, but only one time. There are a lot of different transmission noises and feelings that come through the clutch on this car. Its normal.

CaptainSlow 06-14-2010 05:01 PM

I don't know if this is the same thing but I notice a loud springy/knocking type sound when I'm in first and going up my driveway into the garage. The sound manifests itself when I push the clutch pedal in. The RPMs are very low as well. It doesn't sound very refined. I took it into the dealership and it didn't make the sound there of course. Not sure what it is or if I should be worried but it sounds similar to your issue.

Cmike2780 06-14-2010 06:07 PM

Its normal. Usually only happens in first gear when you are crawling/decellerating and disengage the clutch. It sounds like clunk! followed by mechanical swirling. I could be wrong, but I think it has something to do with the syncros. Nothing to worry about, just press the clutch a little slower and it won't happen.

ZOLE 06-14-2010 06:11 PM

OP, yes I've felt this too. It comes and goes. Apparently it's pretty normal for this transmission.

Oscar135 06-14-2010 10:34 PM

Thanks for all the feedback. The noise I felt and heard was like a spring was hitting something. It was only when releasing the pedal. My son could hear it from the passenger seat. Hopefully it doesn't return.

chuckd05 06-15-2010 01:05 AM

my throw out bearing is an annoyance... It was fine than it became obnoxious after my first trip to the track.

Eventually maybe I'll bring it in and play dumb :eekdance:, But its normal and like someone said a common Nissan occurrence.

I bet if you complained enough they could give you a new clutch/throw out bearing but your new clutch will do the same thing eventually.

Oscar135 06-15-2010 06:41 PM

I was lucky enough today to have the problem happen while the dealer was still open. As it turns out the service manager read something today about a problem like I was having. He is going to confirm with his mechanic tomorrow but thinks the clutch pedal assembly will need to be replaced. I will keep everyone posted.

RCZ 06-15-2010 08:01 PM

mine does that.. little bumps and knocks when I hold the clutch in..

jayl 06-16-2010 03:04 PM

I have noticed this also... and like for others its only while releasing the clutch from the 1st....

so is this normal ? or something needs replacing? I have only had the car 4 days now!.

yes, my other car yrs ago stopped squeaking just as soon as it arrived the dealer to be warranty serviced... :icon14:

Oscar135 06-16-2010 06:25 PM

I spoke to the dealer and the document he was reading wasn't for the 370z. He asked that I bring it in for them to look at it. My problem may be different from others here. It does happen when releasing the clutch but it doesn't matter what gear you are in. Even when I'm stopped and push the pedal in and release it I hear the pop. I am out of town next week so it will be the week after next before I can update everyone.

jayl 06-16-2010 08:11 PM

thanks and good luck!

fisherg 06-18-2010 10:56 AM

My clutch has occasionally done the exact same thing. I had researched this and some other "Z" owners have commented on this on the web. My "click" happens only rarely and it happens when you release the pedal near the top of its travel. It does not matter it the car is running or not. If the car sits for several days it dissapears. This leads me to believe it is related to hydraulics in the clutch system.

mikerogowski 06-19-2010 04:29 AM

I have felt and heard this noise from my z also. I think It's safe to say that it is not a problem. We can't all have faulty transmissions. :)

Vegitto-kun 06-19-2010 08:33 AM

Sometimes I am SO glad that I own the AT

with all these rattling, knocking, shaking, vibrating, wtf sounds with the MT

Oscar135 06-19-2010 08:40 AM

When the passenger asks what the noise is while you're shifting, it's a problem. I don't think this is a transmission problem. I tend to agree with fisherg, it feels like the hydraulics. I am considering leaving the car with the dealer next week while I am out of town. I just hope the car is in one piece when I pick it up on Friday.

ryann.mendoza 07-17-2010 10:40 PM

I have the same clicking/knocking noise when I release the clutch. I took mine to the dealership to get it checked out and also the rattle in the hatch area. Unfortunately, it's the weekend so there's no technicians till Monday. I will post as soon as I find out anything. Apparetly a lot of the 2010 Z's are having the clicking issue but then again it's a salesman who said it.

It's not as bad as we make it seem. It just feels like something is off slightly, not like our clutch pedal is going to blow up.

spearfish25 07-18-2010 11:30 AM

All I've noticed is an occasional rhythmic 'bobbing' of the clutch pedal. It probably moves less than 1/16" but you can feel it when you put your foot on the clutch. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. Either way, my clutch is working just fine so who cares?

ryann.mendoza 07-19-2010 07:15 PM

I got the Z back today. The rattle from the hatch area is actually a broken clip. The clutch pedal has to be replaced. They ordered the part and will notify me when it comes it. My Z is the first one to have the clutch pedal being replaced. It's still safe to drive. If u guys are having the same issue, I suggest to bring it in so it can be replaced under warranty.

if the sound you are talking about the clutch clunk that most get and say is normal ? or was this something different you were getting?

do you get any clunk sounds now when going form 1st to 2nd at low rpm's?

Thanks,
Jay

It's the clunking sound that the OP is having. A clunking/knocking noise on the clutch release. It does it everytime I release the clutch on all gear shifts. The rattle on the hatch area is still there but it's not as loud as before. Hope that explanation makes sense as that's the only way I can describe it.

RCZ 07-20-2010 03:48 PM

I've heard already from several sources that its completely normal for the little bumps...

Oh okay. Well, the service dept. already ordered my clutch pedal assembly. Might as well get it replaced. I'll update on how it goes and if I still get the clunk/knock noise on the clutch. If it's gone, great. If not, atleast I know it's a normal characteristic of the clutch since this is my first rwd car and first Nissan. (coming from a Honda civic Si sedan)

jhh343 07-20-2010 08:53 PM

My clutch pedal makes the same noise when I release it from time to time. Haven't seen any effects on performance. If Nissan hasn't said anything about it I wonder what difference there will be with a replacement pedal.

Oscar135 07-26-2010 09:24 PM

I happened to be at the dealer today for an interior panel issue and spoke to the service manager. While scheduling an appointment with him I brought up the clutch problem. I haven't had time to go back and have this further troubleshot. The service manager indicated they had been working on another Z with he same knocking issue. The entire pedal assembly was replaced along with some shim modifications. The problem never has been resolved. I suggested it might be a hydraulic issue but he felt it was still related to the pedal. It seems there is too much play where the pin meets the pivot assembly. I will update everyone once they look at my car.

ryann.mendoza 07-26-2010 11:55 PM

brought my car in this morning for the replacement clutch pedal and got it back around noon. the new clutch pedal feels good. no more clicking noise at the top of clutch release. just wanted to update this post. oh yea, i took at mission hills nissan.

Oscar135 07-27-2010 07:16 AM

Thanks for the update Ryann. I hope they can resolve my problem too. The noise and feel of the clutch drives me crazy when it happens.

ryann.mendoza 07-27-2010 12:10 PM

Ur welcome. I'll update if the problem comes back with the new pedal.
