Carbon Fiber Drive Shaft

was just reading the article on the new SLS amg and they were saying how cool its cf drive shaft was."scant 9 lb." roadandtrack mag july2010 pg 44.

anyone know how much our cf drive shaft weighs?

Nick911sc 06-11-2010 01:25 PM

Let me google that for you

Ours is reinforced carbon, so it will weight more then the SLS

jetguy 06-11-2010 01:33 PM

so nick, what did you find on google?

kenchan 06-11-2010 01:34 PM

that just sounds like another part that can break on the benz. :D

I found on Google that it's not really made for weight saving since it is not fully carbon fiber. But aids in the vehicle stability if there is a front end collision almost like a spring to stop the impact further away from the cabin of the vehicle.

Vette's have CF shafts too and Gawd knows they're abused! Differentials explode and axles break but not the driveshaft!

Less rotational mass and weight is the benefit..

Man...that safety stuff isnt as sexy as the mercs 9lb weight..oh well. would be cool if someone could come up with an actual weight of ours though.
Our cars have SO many cool/exotic features that not many people talk about on here too often, like the carbon fiber drive shaft, and one that always gets my juices flowing are the MAGNESIUM PADDLE SHIFTERS WITH PERFORATED LEATHER INSERTS!! i mean if thats not sexy ,then what is?

My bestfriend and I separated the yoke from a CF shaft in his '93 ZR1 w/ slicks and a Lingenfelter 368  Although, more than likely a bad shaft. We went back to the aluminum one and now all we break are axles. ;)

i like to think of our driveshaft as less of carbon fiber and more of carbon fiber reinforced plastic. it like radiator core support material with a different blend. i work with real carbon fiber tubes at my work and that stuff is waaaay different from our drive shaft and hella strong/light. a half inch wall 3" diameter tube with fiberglass cladding weighs around ten pounds at 4' length. and those shafts hold up over a ton of weight, and thats after we punch a ton holes in it. the plastic is garbage in comparison that is designed to snap in half in an accident so it doesn't enter the cabin or force the motor up into the firewall.

I also used to work with advanced composite in an aerospace application.

So no one has the testes to just yank their's off and weigh it? Well by God I'm all over it next weekend if no one's done it.

jnaut 06-13-2010 09:55 PM

I have had mine out a couple times but never weighed it If I had to guess prolly say 15 to 17 Lbs .
