Also, someone reported the SRM will automatically turn off once you exceed speeds around 120MPH, but after turning the car off and back on it works fine again.

The gears (4.08s) will make you accelerate much faster. It can take off a few tenths of your quarter mile time and improve your 60' times.

You will lose top end speed, meaning you can know only go to something like 180mph instead of like 200mph. Realistically I don't think any of us will ever go that fast so that's not much of a concern for me.

You will lose some MPG because your RPMs will be higher (500RPMs higher) when cruising around, especially on the freeway. I personally don't mind it b/c if I was concerned about MPG I wouldn't have bought the Z in the first place.

The hardest thing is keeping traction with the gears from what I read. So make sure if you upgrade the gears to have a good set of tires and a good differential (stock VLSD at the minimum).

I will post more info soon when I create my review.

i definitely look forward to it, i have been toying with the idea recently but the fact that srm will shut off is kind of a downer(not enough to put it off though, it just means i have to learn how to heel and toe), im really interested in how it will increase acceleration, tbh i feel the Z takes off pretty quickly stock granted my last car was a turbo eclipse and the turbo lag on there was pretty bad(i didnt spool until 3.5K)

SRM does shut off around 120mph. But it doesn't turn back on after a while, even after a restart.. atleast with my car that's the case.

Yes it does make the car feel faster, but IMO the 1/4 mile times is second place to the 'fun factor' of the 4.08 gears.

And yes, get some good tires!

Are you keeping the stock vlsd or aftermarket LSD like os given or quaife?

I will list the parts and stuff I got when I create my review. I personally kept the stock VLSD but I wish I had the extra money to get a better limited slip. I should be fine though since I will be driving it mostly on the street and my car will see very little track time.

Where are most of you guys buying your 4.08 gears from? I'm always searching for best price.

Just saw this thread for the first time... I love this stuff:tup:

I swear I smelled gear oil when looking at those pictures with the diff torn appart.

Just to add my .02 to this thread... I've been running 4.08 gears in my Z for about 6 months now and love them. Acceleration is GREATLY improved. I don't notice it much now since I've had them for a while, but I'm sure if I were to take a spin in a Z with stock rear end, I would notice.

My gas mileage dropped 2mpg... But I do have a little bit of a lead foot shifting at around 4-5k each gear.

SRM works, but not as good as with the stock rear end. Downshifting while decelerating is smooth.. Anything else is a little "jerky" until you get used to it. Also during high speed runs (120-130mph+) the SRM will shut itself completely off and won't come back on until you turn the car off for a bit then turn it back on. Not sure why... Not a big deal.

Top speed is hardly affected... I can still hit 140mph easily (and quickly) with room to go. I don't have big enough balls to see what the speed is at red line in 6th gear... But I know it's FAST.

Traction was definitely an issue with the OEM Bridgestone RE050's... Even with 305's in the rear. Since I upgraded to the RE-11's... I hardly have any traction problems and the car pulls like a freight train. Best tires, in my opinion, hands down.

That is all... :D

Glad to hear that man. I'm putting my RE-11s on next week and I just got the gears yesterday. Good to know that the traction will be better.

Just get the gear and install kit from Z1... You'll pay a little more vs piecing it together yourself, but at least you'll know you're getting everything you need for a successful install.

Can someone list the parts needed for these mods and maybe where to get them =] Thanks!

Dwnshift 01-26-2013 08:48 PM

We have hit well over 170...but we rev a little higher with ours ;)
You should be able to purchase the set through Nissan Motorsports parts as well.

Hi,

Thanks for the part numbers here!

Do you happen to know the part number for a sport manual pumpkin too?

1. Both lsd and non-lsd manual 370z take the same gears. no mod needed to do the 4.08 ratio swap. straight install.

get parts from 2006 nissan frontier xe 2.5l manual trans

1. 38100-0c760 ring/pinion
2. 38165-0c020 pinion crush sleeve
3. 43262-01p1a pinion nut
4. 38154-0c000 spacer between pinion bearing and drive gear
5. 38120-ec000 pinion bearing
6.gasket maker
7.gear oil

optional parts( i did not use these but the installer might request that you repalce them)
8. 38140-0c000 pinion bearing
9. input shaft seal
