Will short shifter help my clunky shifting?
 

Well I started a post earlier and almost everyone said it's normal with the z. So if I buy a short shifter, would it help me shift smoother? Going from 1st to 2nd has always rough like there is a resistance at the gate, I can shift gear still but it's not smooth at all and now it's happening to 3rd (even when I shift in one motion or two) it's just not as worse as 2nd gear. So would a short shifter help? Thanks and please excuse my english if it doesn't make sense to you, please ask for clarification

It won't help that "resistance feeling". I installed my short shifter and though it cleaned up a bit of the slop, you still have that odd shift resistance from 1st to 2nd. I do not normally have an issue with 2nd to 3rd though.

I'm not a mechanic, Tony, but logic tells me the clunkiness is IN the tranny, not in the shifter. So, trial & error might be in order here. Good luck. May be an engineer or mechanic in the forum might be of more help than yours truly.

TipsZ is correct, it will probably not help with the "clunky" feel, but any soft or rubbery feeling will be gone. It creates more of a click in feeling when you engage a gear now where as before it was softer.
I think from the 350 and now today the 1-2 shift is the transmission and one of those design flaws we live with and get benefits else where.

What was your previous car? The Z's tranny is clunky and shifting is notchy. There is no way to cure that, so if yer coming from say a Honda where shifting is very smooth and easy, you'll have to get used to it.

No. If anything you lose leverage and have to work a little harder to shift.

I think that this is inhearend with nissan transmissions, I remember driving my buddies 1990 300ZX and it had the same kind of feel. At the low price point nissan offers this car at, you just don't get that refined expense put into the transmission. I just hope that it doesn't need a rebuild after about 100,000 miles or less. You combine this with the clutch engagement and you worry about letting anyone test drive your car.:iagree:
