I just read on the internet that crew chiefs in NASCAR and Formula 1 are scrambling to find a replacement oil for that sh1t Mobil 1 they're using. Apparently they heard about this in the370Z.com. The article went on to say that Amsoil appears to be the best replacement after reading further in this forum. Hey, go tell all your friends that you heard it here first!!!!

And Amsoil may very well be the best replacement... :p Even though you're clearly joking, are you sure you want to open that can of worms? :)

All right, just to add more fun to this great thread, can someone explain, why Ferraris come out of the factory with Royal Purple? I haven't seen any commercial links/relations between the 2 cies...

Ummm...You would think, If that were true, that Roal Purple would be bragging about it on their site.... I wasn't able to find any such endorsement..

LiquidZ 03-04-2010 08:00 PM

Just because an oil is a factory fill does not mean it is a good oil. If you have the money and resources that ExxonMobil has, you can be the factory fill of any car manufacturer in the world. Its simply another way to push their product.

An overwhelmingly majority of the vehicles they supply oil for are high performance vehicles. What better way to market your product than to say your oil is used in the best engines of the world?

Ferrari is offically using and recommending—for its Ferrari models in the USA (they don't mention Canada)—the new Pennzoil Ultra.

I would like to know what they are using in Europe?

NyCSnEaK 03-04-2010 10:23 PM

Out of all the UOA of mobil 1 I have seen. Their Euro 0w-40 is the only one I would use. Anyone running this grade presently in their 370?

Answer: Shell Helix Ultra (with thread)

feelzpwr91 03-05-2010 12:02 AM

eff these oil threads im done and out.

Terror 03-05-2010 12:40 AM

There is usually a lot of good information on this website

bobtheoilguy.com

they analyze used oil, and through some good reading you can determine for yourself the best/worst brand(s) of syn oil.

mcdonald's is the leading restaurant in the world, but that doesn't mean they have the best food...

NIZMOZ 03-05-2010 07:26 AM

Mobil 1 use to be good but they have changed their formulation so many times since then that it isn't that great anymore. Penzoil Plat and ultra are better than M1. And just because manufactures use it doesn't mean it's good. Just means they got a good deal on it that is all. BITOG UOA tests are good enough to show how good it is vs other oils and is proof. I stopped using M1 a while back and since now use Penzoil or Amsoil.

ianthegreat 03-05-2010 08:58 AM

the n54 engine comes with Castrol from the factory.. i switched to 0-40w soon after. currently, i'm testing out royal purples 5w-30, seems to be fine.. however, only an analysis will tell. little shearing, but that is to be expected from FI engines.

i would assume a similar 5w-30 would be great for the VQ.

Hmm where are they #1? Please show us the ratings that say this.

j.arnaldo 03-05-2010 01:16 PM

You'll find some guys here swear by Amsoil, others by the Purple stuff, others by Pennzoil, etc. Truth of the matter is, it boils down to personal preferences and budgetary issues. Since the 90s I've been using Mobil 1, with excellent results. Keep doing your homework & arrive at your own conclusion, dude. Good luck!

:iagree:I would also like to see proof!

TipsZ 03-05-2010 01:51 PM

As long as you change the oil within its specified range, I doubt you are going to see much of a difference over a 100k mile period. I think the key is to just change the oil regularly and not try to push the limits of said oil of your choice.

Zsteve 03-05-2010 02:50 PM

I was told by the service manager that the ester oil was to help quiet things down in the engine and the only way I can see that happening is that it has to be more lubricated and I guess thats what the ester is suppose to do. But I just put in royal purple and have a couple hundred miles on it and I notice no difference in engine noise. Its loud to begin with.

Chupacabra 03-05-2010 03:04 PM

^^^ word... Ive had RP in mine for almost 3,500 miles, and i am pleased with the results, i used to run Mobile 1 on her, and its all the same thing.

:iagree: And it's just that simple!!! Noone has yet come in here and provided proof that an engine will fail by using a 'crap' motor oil.

LiquidZ 03-05-2010 09:27 PM

Oil is not just oil. There is a lot more that goes into making a quality oil than just petroleum. Of all things you can save money on, oil would be the last thing I would go cheap on.

When you say quiet things down are you speaking of engine slapping/knocking noise?

I just want to know what oil is best for making that slapping/knocking noise go away. I've been trying to choose between the Nissan Ester Oil and RP. My first oil change is coming up soon.

My dealer says its the injectors and all Nissan injectors sound that way.. Does that hold any truth?

Thanks!

That's not the engine noise they're talking about. It's not engine "loudness" that the Ester oil helps with, there is an issue with valvetrain noise (clatter) in some VQ37 engines - according to a Nissan TSB (it's posted here on the site somewhere) the Ester oil is a "cure" for that valvetrain noise. Capisce?

tbonesteak 03-11-2010 03:41 PM

M1 is good but I prefer Redline mainly because its formula is ester based. So far, so good but i only have 6800 miles, and 1800 miles on the redline.
