I live in Socal where it's always warm and street maintenance is (relatively) good as well as getting rain every now and then to rinse things off. Dry, warm pavement only hits the vdc in 1st gear and at gear change. A trip to Las Vegas had much lower temperatures and always dusty pavement. Even with dry pavement, the dust makes it very slippery and the VDC comes on a lot as well as the antilock brakes. Maybe this is what's happening to you?

I don't feel or hear any wheelspin/tires breaking loose or anything of that sort. Does that seem normal? What conditions cause the VDC system to activate?

Isn't that around the passing speed? Some people like to drop a gear and gun it out of frustration to pass someone...and the rear breaks loose easy around that rpm. I guess around that rpm and after a certain throttle percentage is applied, the VDC automatically comes on so it can avoid any possible break in traction altogether. Nothing worse than clutch kicking wile trying to switch lanes at 60 mph in a rwd sports car in traffic. Your *** will get sideways QUICK. So I think it's a good thing.
