Another oil cooler question.
 
Doing a little research on the oil cooler issue and figuring out how to proceed. Have a few questions, if anybody has any suggestions...

1. Everybody is putting the cooler in front of the radiator, but I'm a little concerned about raising coolant temps - especially with the large coolers people are using. And I think they're putting them at the radiator outlet, where the cool coolant is (correct me if I'm wrong). Has anybody seen their coolant temps go up?

2. I was thinking about going behind the radiator to avoid the problem, avoid the damper issue, and avoid taking off the bumper. Does anybody know if there's an area to mount to back there?

3. Do anybody know if there's a good place to mount a remote oil filter, while I'm at it, to avoid having to crawl under?

4. I understand there's a bottom cover, blocking off access to the oil filter. I like the cover, to keep things clean. However, given the heat problems, has anybody taken off the cover to see if that improves the heat situation?

mounting the oil cooler in front of the radiator will not cause your coolant temps to rise. Maybe in non moving traffic for a long period of time you might notice a small difference with temp compared to another z in the same traffic with out one but it would be minimal.

as for the other questions, im not sure where to begin....

Even in the race car, we havent seen a budge in coolant temps as a result of having the oil cooler in front of the rad. We are in the process of changing out the whole cooling system to a twin pass radiator setup, with oil/water heat exchanger built into it but this is being done primarily to drop oil temps even further for track use in the upcoming hot weather.

To answer your second question, there is no room for an oil cooler behind the radiator. With any type of air heat exchanger, you really need should try to get direct airflow on the unit for maximum effectiveness.

But you should have nothing to worry about, by placing an oil cooler in front of your radiator.

I agree, water cooling is robust on this car... the water temp gauge is not entirely accurate, but even so, I feel pretty confident about the cooling capacity - haven't seen the water temp go very high at all... now when folks start adding big *** intercoolers, and oil coolers, trans coolers, etc, then we'll have to scrutinize the data more closely

Good to know...I didn't want to solve the oil temp problem by starting a cooling temp problem. (Cooling was a bear on my old Eclipse. It had a coolant-to-oil oil cooler.)

Yeah those types put a higher load on the coolant side. As stated the Water side has lots of overhead. The car also runs relatively cool for a modern emissions car. Typical 180-182 in mild weather. The water temp "Gauge" on the Z keeps the same light lit from 155 degrees all the way up to 215 so that's pretty worthless. Monitoring with a scangauge though says No problem. Check the Oil cooler DIY link in my Sig. below for more info on temps etc.
