Oil spilled while filling up.

:shakes head: Fail for me. So yesterday when i got home after work, around midnight, i decided to check my oil level. It was just above the minimum. I had an extra quart left of royal purple, so I decided to put about half a quart in.

So i start pouring in my dimly lit garage. Im like its going in smooth. Then I second guess myself because it was hard to tell and as soon as i 'corrected' the flow it didnt pout into the whole. I didnt think I spilled much. So I just cut half an empty bottle of eatter and used that as my funnel. I went to bed and didnt think about it. So today when I went to work, when I was stopped I smelled burning oil...ahhhhh.

Anyway, when I went home I took a look at it and there isnt very much oil, anywhere. My question is...Will it take long for the rest to burn off? The rest of the oil is pretty hard to get to, and it doesn't look like much.

Paul_S 02-07-2010 04:36 AM

Is it worth getting the engine bay steam cleaned?

m4a1mustang 02-07-2010 07:40 AM

A little bit of oil should burn off.

370Zsteve 02-07-2010 07:45 AM

The only place oil will "burn off" is if it landed on the exhaust manifold.

All other oil will be there forever and will slowly turn to a dirty, grimy, greasy film. Unless you clean it with a rag.

Invest a dollar in a funnel!

Then wipe it down with a rag. :shakes head:

And you know a lot about funnels, seeing as how you need one to keep it off the toilet seat. Living with you must be a pain! :icon18:

And geez, next time I piss before you I'll wipe the seat before you sit down :stirthepot:

m4a1mustang 02-07-2010 07:54 AM

Just don't leave any streaks.

7-LED flashlight in rear glovebox; it can be a lifesaver, dude!

6spd 02-07-2010 08:59 AM

take the undershield off and spray brake clean where the oil is. just make sure to catch the oil in a pan or something. and try not to breath the brake clean spray either.

j.arnaldo 02-07-2010 10:29 AM

Yeah, the funnel would definitely help.

CBRich 02-07-2010 10:45 AM

So you guys are saying we should be using funnels when we pour oil in the dark at midnight?

And using the restroom if you don't have hose control, yes.

IDZRVIT 02-07-2010 11:39 AM

Should have topped up with Amsoil. Apparently it doesn't spill in the dark.

bloodo 02-07-2010 12:08 PM

Questions: Don't you always let the oil settle before checking (15-30 mins after the engine is off)? Wouldn't that give you a more accurate reading on your oil level?

Anyways, if you don't have a funnel, use a clean piece of paper to make a funnel.

6spd 02-07-2010 04:47 PM

you can check after a couple minutes, the difference is very small. to get the most accuracy, you should wait 10-15~ish.

the_student 02-09-2010 11:39 AM

Yeah I waited about 20 min because I ate something and looked up email. There was very little residue and it was mostly on the black metal valvehead cover. I just wrapped a rag around a screwdriver to reach all the spots. It must have burnt all of because there isn't a smell anymore. Half of an old plastic bottle makes a great funnel.

I would wonder why your oil level was low.

Btw, your screen name is befitting this post. You were schooled by oil. :happydance:

Haha. I don't know why I chose that screenname, I already graduated when I joined. I did get schooled by oil. lol

Anyway, my level was above the minimum amount and its been 2000 miles since I changed the oil in my car to where I filled it up to a little bit more than halfway up. I love to drive my car with a little enthusiasm because its such a fun car. I am no stranger to 7k rpm's.

Find an aquafina bottle. It will sit on the opening without any issue. Then you can slowly pour the oil. No drip.

2000 miles and it burnt that much oil? even with spirited driving, this would concern me. Especially on a normally aspirated motor. I sure hope Nissan hasn't reproduced their oil consumption issues with the 3.7l... They seem very good at recreating the same issues over and over again... (tire feathering, fueling issues, poor paint quality, etc.)

Unfortunately some people had problem already with oil consumption on the 370Z, but no TSB out that I know off.

When I read this I feel like I should had kept my 2006 350Z which it didn't have an oil consumption, even that that was the engine with that problem and a TSB was out, dunno... :stirthepot:

I just entered the 370Z arena, so I didn't know anyone was having oil consumption issues. But, this doesn't surpise me; though it does sadden me. I honestly am about to give up on Nissan. I have had five of their products. 2005 G35, 2003 350Z, 2006 Pathfinder, 2009 GT-R and now a 2010 370Z. I understand having issue with the first year model GT-R and 350Z, but I have had issue with every Nissan product i have owned. Their quality has really dropped over the past 10 years.

WOW, you had issues with the GT-R?

Minor ones, personally, but others are having some pretty serious issues. Myself, I had tire feathering, (too reminiscent of the 350) piss-poor paint quality, rattles and buzzes inside of the dash and rear interior (same issue with my G35). Others, who are not so lucky, are having transmission failures, steering wheel lock failures, (370 seems to be having this, as well) engines slinging rods and coming apart, (non-modified) and fuel filler problems.

Very sad when an 85k "super car" is plagued by issues Nissan has created and resolved multiple times in the past.

I am going to assume that the issues were considered minor by you as you continue to buy their products!!!! :)

I only had the 280zx and never had any issues with it. I only gave it up as parts were beginning to become unavailable. 1 trip to the junk yard was one too many for me.

If it were my car I would not use any brake cleaner unless I immediately followup with water. Thar sucker dries up everything especially rubber hoses.

What I normally do is use 50% water and 50% degreaser. Or Simple Green. I would just spray and spray and spray. Then I spray and spray again with 100% water to rinse

steam cleaning went out back in the 80's when water damaged much of engine electronics. I am sure they are still around but I wouldn't take my chances.

It is more of the fact that I am a Nissan enthusiast. I have been more than willing to 'test' other models to try and keep Nissan in my blood. But, it is very quickly getting to a point to where I bail on the brand and move on to others. Porsche and Lamborghini are looking rather nice at the moment.

I know nothing about Lambos. I do however :ughdance:can disect air-cooled Porsches. I am still looking for a 993S as my next baby even though I still have one remaining unfinished smog-exempt 1975 model.

Good luck to a fellow car enthusiast. :)

I have a bigger fail, a few months back before taking my car out to the track to test sway bar settings, I too topped off the oil. The problem was........I forgot to put the oil cap back on:eekdance:
Ran the car through the cones around the track, etc. a few days later I started to smell something burning, I probably didn't notice it too much in the beginning because I like to drive with my windows down. So I'm getting gas and I think I should probably open the hood to see what that smell is. Wow!!! oil F*%N everywhere  It was spraying out of the hole in a fine mist and was all over the motor and on the bottom of the hood, amazingly It was still at the low setting on the dipstick, so I only lost about a quart and a half. My oil cap was resting in a spot in the engine bay, so at least I didn't loose that too.:bowrofl:

Minicobra,

don't worry about the cap. My latest screwup was 2 weeks ago. I had to drop the engine and tranny on my car to replace the clutch, t.o. bearing, etc.

3 hrs later the starter would spin but the motor would not turn. 15 minutes later performing problem analysis, I found out that I had forgotten to install the 'starter gear ring.'. Obviously, I had to spend another 4 hours dropping the engine and tranny again. !!!!!!
