Cooling Fan Operation

Hello,

Pretty sure my cooling fans are not working, I had the coolant temp rising and rising reading at 205F+ at idle, car parked and neither fan was running. When I drive, coolant temp drops down to 180, so I am sure the rest of the system is working and I have no CEL light/codes.

I am going to replace the control module for the fans, but my question is does any one know the expected normal operation for the fans so I can verify if they are both working correctly? I can not seem to find this information anywhere.

This conversation from another thread is about oil temps, but it has the information you are looking for. You can also lower the temp threshold for when the cooling fans come on using a tuning software such as Ecutek.

I've been looking at this for a little while. I use Torque to display three temperatures: VVT Oil Temperature (from the NADV add-on for Nissans), coolant temperature, intake manifold temperature.

The thermostat and engine fans are set by the coolant temperature: the thermostat moves to circulate/cool at 185degrees F. the cooling fans kick on at 212degrees F.

I don’t know much about the cooling fans, but you could put the car in a “diagnostic “ mode that will have the fans kick on. I tried what this video https://youtu.be/GIhZhCUmepQ described on my 370z and the fans came on.

I know it’s a 350z but it works on the 370

If you are going to be doing your own troubleshooting and repairs, the FSM is a very valuable resource. It will have the info you are looking for and much, much more. Link in my sig.

Or this one.

I tried it on my 370Z and worked fine.

I was going to start a new thread but this one was only a year old so i'll bump it.

I know there are several temperature discussions but this is more directly geared towards the fan operation.

Here is my situation, i have a 2014 370z auto roadster. I live in Florida.

If i start my car and lets say i go to a park and drive around for an hour at 10-20mph so i'm constantly starting and stopping and not getting much airflow from the slow speed my temperature will get up to about 218-220 degrees. My radiator fans do not turn on, And i feel like my car is cooking. if i have the top down cuz its nice out i really notice the heat emanating from my car especially when i stop. I also feel a lot of heat from my center console transmission area.

Scenario #2:

I do the same thing except i turn my Air conditioning on first, when i do i instantly hear my fans turn on and they will stay on the entire time i drive and my temperature will get to about 180-185 maybe. after a while when it is at that temp i really hear the fans they sound like they are cranking full blast speed to keep the car cool.

So the question is this how the fans are supposed to behave? does this happen for everyone else?

Also, when i hit that high 220 temp i have turned on my A/C and it will kick on the fans and very slowly start to cool down a little bit over time, maybe down to 200-210.

Thanks for any info.

It's designed to kick the fans on when you turn the A/C on.
