Found some misc bits in the oil pan

Background is the Z was purchased new, daily driven for 6 years and is now getting built for more track reliability. Driving during it's life has been mostly highway with a good bit of hard driving including a couple of very limited track stints (due to oil temps).

It finally got on the lift today and a couple of different things were found in the lower oil pan, which has never been removed before. There were 2 small metal pieces and 2 pieces of gasket. The photos show one of the metal pieces and one of the pieces of gasket broken in half. The 2 pieces not shown were extremely similar to those in the photo.

Kevin isn't really sure where they came from. And isn't sure there's much we can do about it. We are moving forward as planned. The upper oil pan and oil pump are coming off tomorrow along with the front timing cover. So he'll be digging a little deeper in the oil pathways and can at least keep an eye out for anything amiss.

I have spoken with several knowledgeable people and no one really has a solid idea what it is or what it came from. If you have any thoughts, please share.

Whoa

Determining whether or not the "silver" bit is ferrous (magnetic) or not might help you narrow down where it came from.

The silver pieces are not magnetic.

The brown pieces look like part of the Galley gasket. They are no doubt pieces of a gasket. The silver piece just looks like left over machining piece from the original build. I don't see anything to worry about here.

This seems like the most logical explanation. Agreed on all fronts :tiphat:

The metallic could be casting flash (waggles hand back and forth) or maybe a galley plug, similar to some of the old Ford freeze plugs.
Of the 2, I would lean more towards the galley plug. I can't imagine places where flash that thick would see forces strong enough the break them off. For sure, no machinist is going to leave chips that size on a shipping part. Inspection would have his ***.

The C7 Vette's had a major problem with machining chips left in the motor. It was required that Chevy did the first oil change so that they could inspect the oil. A few people lost motors because of it.

Wow. Just wow.
I guess work ethic truly is dead...(smh).

I am not sure if that is totally correct. I do know from my first hand experience that that dry sump cars, like mine, needed to have the oil changed in the first 500 miles due to the gaskets leaching and causing the oil to froth. So you would drive 500 miles, change the oil, and you would be good to go.

Good bye paper gaskets

I don't see anyone mentioning to check oil pressure after finding pieces of the gallery gaskets?

The Z is sitting. having other work being done on it. I'm should Jar is thinking about an oil pressure gauge now.

I purchased the gauge and Galeforce single pod A-pillar over a year ago :tiphat:
