First Oil Change: Mobile 1 or Castrol Syntec?

I’ve had my Z for several months and just hit 1,700 miles today. With that being said, it’s not my primary driver. I’m starting to think about doing its first oil change and I need some opinions on what oil I should go with. I don’t race the car. She only comes out on nice days, so there is no need to go totally berserk and use racing oil. But I don’t plan to cheap out either. In the past I have used Mobile 1 and Castrol Syntec. Which one is the better of the two and why? Do I have any other choices?

Any and all help is always appreciated!

Mobil 1 is better but Castrol Syntec EDGE is pretty good i must admit. Even though you said you dont want a performance oil this is probably the best for our motor because it's and Ester base oil (REDLINE)

Red Line Synthetic Oil - Motor Oil - 5W30 Motor Oil

its probably going to be full of posts about wtf ester oils are, castrol is a bad oil or somthing, and everyone loves Mobil 1, then there will be a few people who say its amsoil for me. lol....... basically choose what you'd like any of the three are good especially if you dont drive the car that much good luck man im done with this thread bros

If you don't use redline oil the seams of the piston bases will split after a while of use (usually 50k miles or so). The group 5 esters are needed to help keep the rings seated so that the VVEL actuators run smoothly and the car stays on the proper timing.

ok, i'm gonna throw my two cents in on this one. first of all, i realize we have similar but different motors. i started changing my oil after the first 3k miles with mobil 1 synthetic 5w30. i usually changed it every 5k afterwards give or take. due to my trip to ZCON this year in the truck i stretched it a little further and ended up changing my oil right at 60k the last time (right after i got back from Tx), again with mobil 1. recently though, my engine has gotten very rough running. on the cold mornings that i've been getting up for work (below 30*) it has made loud (i can only describe it as) "piston slapping" noises. i became very concerned about it so i called the dealership here in anderson, who i've never had dealings with since i just moved down here in december. long story short they said to bring it in and they would drive it to see if they could come to any conclusions based on the sounds it was making. i was due for a oil change tho because i was at 65k miles now. i took it in this past friday evening and they drove it on saturday morning (go figure it'd be warmer that morning that the entire month of dec and jan so far lol). they couldn't hear anything abnormal. i let them go ahead and just use their regular mobil oil (non-synthetic) and let them do the oil change. i immediately noticed a VAST improvement in NVH and start up noises, even when cold.

long story short: just get the oil changed at the dealership, they will have records of it in case anything happens. the oil they use is spec'd out to work with your engine. they didn't charge me much at all.

HKYStormFront:

I was seriously thinking about doing just that. I have never had a dealership do my oil changes in the past, but with this car I may change my plan of attack.

Voted other: Motul, Redline or Amsoil... best oils out there in my opinion and after having done oil tests (other cars and 350z VQ35HR) it showed better wear characteristics then others.
