7A valve body question?

If you are having to go through the hassle of replacing your valve body with solenoids my advice would be to purchase and install a brand new valve body with solenoids if that is what failed and needs to be replaced. The last thing you want to have to do is take everything apart again to get to the valve body ouch. You can use your current TCM as long as it is not internally damaged have it inspected/tested before you install it. Purchase a new TCM if your current TCM is internally damaged or deemed defective. Used TCM’s can be hit or miss. When I installed my upgraded Level 10 transmission with upgraded Level 10 valve body I was able to reuse my old TCM because it was operating properly before hand. Also this had to be reprogrammed as well no way around it. To my knowledge through your UpRev tune is what can make adjustments for your shift points and firmer line pressure. My tuners advice was since I upgraded to a Level 10 transmission with the upgraded valve body I had to retune my Z to adjust my shift points etc. Do you like your UpRev tune? Have you considered going ECUTek? I believe that ECUTek is more improved software.

My understanding in talking with tuners is that none of the tune software currently available will actually access or alter the code in the TCU.

What tuners do, is alter the inputs to the TCU, to “trick it” into changing transmission performance, shift points, etc..

Even then, the results are limited in terms of significant changes in shift feel, shift timing or converter lock-up behavior.

A different trans or different TCU may respond differently with your existing tune. Odds are it will be fine. But a touch up tune might be needed depending on what your tuner did originally.

Hope that makes sense.

My only concern with your situation is that you described a noise with this issue. If that noise is mecanical in origin, then there may be physical damage to the trans internals. Valvebody malfunctions generally do not produce noise, but do cause function issues.

You can purchase a new “service level” valve body from Nissan or online parts stores for about $500 and slap it onto your trans easy enough. The TCU may still need the latest revision flash from the dealer, to work exactly like a factory new trans.

So, you could go through all this process above and still have an internal mechanical issue, and have basically not fixed the car.

Tough situation..

No problem I’m here to help the Z community whenever I can. More times than not it is valve body failure and solenoid replacement your mechanic shop is giving correct information. It is a rare occurrence the TCM or PCM failure will occur on Nissan/Infiniti vehicles unless it was damaged internally as said the 7AT transmission is a reliable/dependable transmission as well as the software. Remanufactured or used can sacrifice quality purchasing a new Genuine Nissan OEM valve body is the best advice. Yes the TCM can be transferred to the new valve body and be reused if it is not damaged. Although you must have the TCM reprogrammed if your mechanic/shop can not perform the reprogram go to a Nissan dealership service department you trust to have this done. When you pull your pan, drain all transmission fluid, and replace your gasket you will notest shifting will be improved after transmission fluid is changed. As stated by my tuner if you are changing anything with the transmission shift point firmness etc. you must retune immediately after as values will change when replacement occurs no matter if you upgrade to the Level 10 valve body or not. Once this is changed as you stated you already did this must be corrected through your tune immediately after or this could be detrimental to your transmission. Look forward to a retune. Too bad you are selling your Z it really is an amazing vehicle to own. Are you considering the 400Z when Nissan enveils it?
