U1024 and P1606

Hello all, never posted but these forums have helped a lot with troubleshooting my car, but I'm a bit stumped on this one. I've been getting very infrequent instances of P1606 codes, and more recently U1024. P1606 I've been able to "fix" by clearing the code while the car isn't cranked and leaving it for a few mins. It did it again this morning and while clearing it "fixed" it again I'm looking to try and permanently fix the problem.

I've seen all sorts of possible solutions including replacing or cleaning cam shaft position sensors, replacing vvel control module, checking wiring, fuses etc. Nothing mechanical has been done to the car in recent memory except part of the rear exhaust needed to be replaced due to an accident late last year.

How involved is replacing the vvel module, would I be realistically able to do this on my own with limited mechanical knowledge? Also in the case of cleaning camshaft position sensors, what would I need to use for that to ensure they aren't damaged?

Thanks in advance guys

Before assuming the module is bad, I'd check/test the wiring. A bad module could cause the U1024 but so can wiring; which would also throw the P1606. Easier to check connectors and continuity than replace the module. YMMV

The FSM (link in sig) has test procedures and R&R instructions.
