Two questions one about coolant the other about a rattle

Hi everyone,

I own a 2012 370Z automatic. The car has AEM Cold air intakes with the ETI modules and a Fast Intentions CBE (no tune). I have noticed that on hot summer days here in California my Z will let a little coolant out the overflow tank's tube. The temperature gauge never rises past its normal state and the car does not overheat. I have been wondering for some time if that is normal?

My second question is about a rattle underneath the car. I upgraded my base brakes to the Akebonos 2 weeks ago and in the process of checking the SS lines for any kinks I heard a rattle as I knelt near the front left tire. I searched the forum and found hits for the Manual cars having quite a bit of flywheel chatter. I raised the car and at first the rattle did seem like it was emanating from the transmission but upon closer inspection an listening around with a mechanics stethoscope, I found the source was actually my passenger side catalytic converter. The rattle is only present when the car is warm and below 3k rpm. Sometimes at idle. Could this cat be going bad? If so what can happen to the car?

Sorry for my ignorance I am fairly new to Z platform and this is my first Sporty car.

Isaac

If your coolant is overfilled, it can weep out the overflow. As for the rattle, yes that is a known issue with the cat rattling. The inside is coming apart. You may throw a code, maybe not. I see HFC's may be in your future.

This. Since you live in the People's Republic be sure to find HFCs that are CARB - compliant, if there is such a thing.

Ensure that you have the proper cap in the proper place...normal looking radiator cap goes on reservoir & flat cap to engine.
Also may want to pressure test cap to make sure it holds proper pressure
PS: don’t overfill

Thanks Spooler, I forgot to add in the OP that I’ve noticed the coolant weeping out after a WOT pull. Nothing too crazy just a quick 0-60 and the actual coolant that is at the bottom of the plastic pan is drops maybe less than an ounce. Do these stock cats fail frequently? My car just hit 40k miles.

I will look to see if my caps are on correctly, how can I go about pressure testing the cap?

Thanks

I been researching catalytic replacements because idk if the rattle will harm my engine. I been finding that most are not California legal. I was hoping to get the Fast intentions HFC but I’m almost sure I won’t pass smog.

If you own a pressure tester kit, it should have an adapter to put cap on one end & tester on other,,,then pump it till it releases pressure...only will take a pump or 2....be sure it goes up to or near the psi/kpi stamped on the cap

I don’t own one, I might look into getting one. If it’s to pricey I’ll go for new caps. Thanks for your help. Do you know if the cat rattling can have a bad effect on my engine?

The catalytic converters are warrantied for 8 years or 80K miles FYI

Might be able to get Nissan to cover it depending on when the car was purchased.

Rattle Noise

I still have my stock cats with roughly 50k miles on them but I swapped those out for Berk Resonated HFCs a year ago and now running ISR Resonated Test pipes since KS doesn't do emissions tests. (Thank goodness!)

Long story short, I did a tune while I had HFCs on that ran stupid rich and actually burned out the cat to the point it sounded like rocks and I was misfiring badly at highway speeds. Since the test pipes I've been good and don't have to worry about any blockage issues anymore since there aren't any! If you're wanting to go the semi-loud route I'd suggest test pipes and a muffler but obviously CARB compliance is another factor into that decision.

I saw that on the manual. I was thinking I might see if I can source some oem air boxes to install on the car along with my factory exhaust. I’ll see if Nissan can warranty it. I have a feeling if they see the aftermarket stuff they might not even have a look. I haven’t called around but just a quick online search has shown me these cats are 590 to 790 a piece.

Lucky lol, Cali has got the worst emissions laws :( I am fearing a poor running engine that might cause something to break so I want to get this fixed ASAP. So I guess it’s safe to say my car is running rich then?
