How Many 7AT Drivers Have Done This...

I'm not even going to ask if this has happened to anyone because I know I can't be the only retard. Lol...

I switch between Auto and Manual mode sometimes throughout my daily commute (not like mid-driving, although I think that's fine too). I mean I'll be driving in auto, then at a light I'll switch to manual, etc. get bored 15 minutes later, switch back.

I was in manual, pulled up to a light, put it in auto, got a phone call (distracted) then forgot and thought I was still in stick. When I go to shift up (thinking I'm in 1st), I popped it into neutral. It was pretty embarrassing...

... please tell me I'm not the only one this has happened to.

vipor 01-08-2010 08:28 AM

yep, the only one.

antman22 01-08-2010 10:24 AM

I haven't done that yet, but now that I've read this, watch it happen to me today. I don't use my cell phone in the car all that often however, so I'm not all that distracted. Usually the distractions come from hot women, in which case that'd be terribly embarrassing for it occur in front of them.

j.arnaldo 01-08-2010 10:42 AM

Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. You're an individual: Do you enjoy doin' that? Knock yourself out, guy! Me? I'm 60, so I keep it on "D". No problemo.

UNKNOWN_370 01-08-2010 10:50 AM

I Don't talk on cell phones while driving to avoid careless behavior..

cptspeed 01-08-2010 01:07 PM

Join the club. in manual I have pulled back(into second on a stick)instead of forward. Redlined it too. Doh

Jason 01-08-2010 02:19 PM

i dont think age has much to do with it - im 22. i just like to shift it from time to time. it's more exciting and gives more control. i hate when im on D, coming to a stop and the car upshifts pushing me forward a bit. sometimes you have to make a sudden stop and that upshift boost is a little scary...

i dont know, it was just on my mind. sometimes people try to act like they dont make mistakes, so i felt like this was one of those things people do and never really talk about.

UNKNOWN_370, i dont use the cell while driving, but the call came in while i was at a red light. do you follow the speed limit at all times too?

If you like the ecitement & control, why did you get an AT?

Cause if we want to feel old and drive like the blue hairs, we can!:happydance:

Demon Z 01-09-2010 02:52 AM

I did that in my A/T 350Z several times.

because (in no particular order):

1. i felt like it and can
2. i had the extra cash
3. higher resale value
4. i like having options (it's stick when i want, it's auto when i want)
5. it's faster than the manual (oh snap. relax guys, it's not that serious)
6. traffic (i'm a business guy, i take a lot of calls, drive clients around, i dont have time to fiddle with stick shift all the time - see #4)
7. i have a lifetime warranty. dont have to worry about clutches.

i had a stick car and im over that little "phase" (im not saying it's a phase for everyone, it just was for me). these are MY reasons and i dont care what anyone else thinks about it because they were my hard-earned $35000. everyone is different.

Luckily he did not shift to "R"or "P" or else good luck to him,it is okay to shift to "N",but must let the revs comes down before shifting back to "D"....to prevent damage to the autobox..

haha. that would suck! although i dont think you can pass N unless your foot is on the brake somehow. i def let the revs come down to idle lol. no neutral bombs on this car. i save that for rentals (jk).

"N" can goes to "R" or "P" without stepping on the brakes, but needs to press the button on the gear selector...

PlazmaStrike 01-10-2010 09:11 AM

I've done it in my Rsx many times. Don't feel bad. though I tend to leave it in manual now to prevent that.

P.S. Its really embarrassing when you have a loud exhaust and do that :shakes head:

kdoske 01-18-2010 10:03 PM

I got you beat by a mile. I was in my 370 talking on the phone using the bluetooth system. I get to a red light and im just yapping yapping yapping away. The person I am talking to says bye. So what do I do? Instead of pushing the hang up button on the steering wheel I push the Start button on the dash! Why did I do this you ask? Who the hell knows! Right after I turn the car of a second later the damn light turns green! I got so flustered after I shut it off I took my foot of the break and didn't even realized it. I kept pushing the button to start the car up, people are blowing their horns at me, and screaming out their windows. FINALLY, I compose myself and put my foot on the brake, start the car, and fly out of there.

Now that was a pretty bad blond moment!

:wtf2:

TARDCORE 01-19-2010 11:25 PM

last night I was driving and it was raining pretty hard. My rear window and side mirors had fogged up badly some how when they were clear moments earlier. So I approach a red light. I push the defrost button for the rear window. Then I look at the door controls for the side view mirrors and notice the button to defrost them is not there. So I began to look around the dash for the button. I become really irritated and I begin frantically looking for this darn button! After a few minutes since my search had began, I popped into reality, noticing my rear window was defrosted, my side mirrors were defrosted, and this ugly tahoe with this mexican dude yelling at me basically saying wtf is your problem. Apparently I had held up the traffic in my lane through the green light and missed it myself. Mine is a 6mt however.

Still haven't found the stupid button... lol kidding.

Ztoon 01-20-2010 12:28 AM

Our gov't. in this province has decided to protect us from such embarrassing distractions by passing a law banning the use of all hand held devises while driving to the tune of a $167.00 fine.

I've done it.

Felt incredibly stupid for it too. At least I didn't do anything BAD.

Zxces50 02-11-2010 08:18 PM

yep occasional mis-shift- lack of focus I think. Overall 7AT great choice for me- long heavy traffic commute- sit back enjoy some music but when open twisty roads paddles are a lot of fun- sort of best of both

I've never done that, but I've done sorta the reverse - I've put it in manual mode, pulled up to a red light, and when the light turned green forgotten that it was in manual mode and that I needed to shift from first to second. Suddenly realizing that your car is revving really LOUDLY and remembering that you need to shift is an unnerving experience for sure!
