I think Trans is shot

So I think my stock 7AT trans is shot (whining noise coming from trans filter) after it was ran on the dyno 5x @14 psi when I was having boost control issues.

The new shop fixed the boost controller, but it seems the damage was already done by the previous shops attempt.

Now I am up for 5K for a rebuild to handle more pwr. But being in Australia, a building a 7AT trans has never been attempted. Therefore, I am thinking of buying the master rebuild kit from IPT, not LVL10! And having a local shop build it.

Or does anyone rekon I could do a swap to another trans type, like a TH400 or 680le, they would be much cheaper and available here?

Anybody could have advice here?

How much whp and wtq are you currently making? The whine noise you are hearing could be coming from several different places. Sounds like it is time to rebuild or replace your 7AT transmission and if it were me I would stick with the 7AT transmission and upgrade it unless you are considering a 6MT transmission swap?? From my experience if you do not have a reputable transmission or driveline shop that you trust doing the rebuild I would purchase a new upgraded 7AT transmission and have it shipped to you there are several different vendors other than Level 10 that have upgraded 7AT units your choice. Also before you purchase a new transmission or have your current transmission rebuilt you should have the noise diagnosed in person by a reputable shop or Nissan dealership service department you trust bringing your Z to.

Well 2 different mechanics have looked at the whining/squealing noise, they both concluded it is coming from the transmission. One of them rekons it is from the TQ converter, the other mechanic rekons it is from inside the transmission.

The second mechanic gave a call to a local auto trans specialist to describe this whining noise on my Z, and that specialist suggested it maybe burnt/damaged clutch plate or band material clogging up the trans fluid filter or pump. This specialist suggested to the workshop to remove trans oil pan and clean it up and check if the noise goes away. So they did this, the noise was still there for about 1/2 hour of driving.

The whining noise went away for about another 1-2 hrs of driving and then comes back. Strangely after this, the car does not feel like it is slipping anymore, actually it feels extremly smooth and responsive to drive, almost more than ever!

I don't get it, the noise has come back permanantly by the sounds of it, but the car is driving beautifuly in all 7 gears it seems.

Now I cannot decide if there is transmission damage or not. Anyhow, I guess I will just have to have the transmission specialist to look at it, don't want to spend 6K in a rebuild if I don't have to.

I have a 7AT I can sell you for 700. Works fine. Not sure if you want something like that until you build up another one.

Just a few bucks in shipping charges. :)

All stock 7AT in a boosted car without even a trans cooler?

Curious as I've been contemplating selling my Z for a boosted unit but not finding any with the required 7AT mods to go with the upped power.

If you're rebuilding make sure to go with a better flex plate and torque converter as well.

Didn't see the Australia part... Lol.

I already have trans cooler and billet flex plate.

Like I was saying, the damage may have been done when it was overboosting on the dyno when it had an incorrect EBC install from that workshop. 14psi may have been too much for 5 pulls. If it stayed at a respectable < 10 psi or so the trans may never exhibit any damage for some time more.

Nonetheless, I drove the car over the weekend for long drives and tested out almost all the gears at various loads and it seemed to be working flawlessly so I may sit on it for a while.

The only way to tell for sure is to tear into the transmission and do an internal inspection. You may have just burnt the fluid and changing it fixed things - maybe not. If this were a NA DD, I'd say run it and see what happens. Since you are boosted, I'd either do an internal inspection or change transmissions (might as well upgrade while you're at it). YMMV

shadow85 04-15-2019 07:01 PM

Yea, most likely will get an internal inspection. It ***** me because the whining noise is still there but the trans has never felt so smooth as it is now!

So you're going to play Local Shop Roulette again despite the fact that no one who has touched your car so far knows their *** from a hole in the ground, and you expect it to end well? You've wasted so much time and money messing around with unqualified local shops. Spend the money and have it done right. It's always cheaper to spend more up front than chase your tail.

Please direct me to a shop in Australia who has much knowledge on 370Z platform and I will be very happy to take my car there?

You do not realise I don't have the luxury on this platform like the US guys do rite?

Anyhow, if you followed any of my threads properly you would realise that I did take my boost control issues to a different repuatable shop and they fixed it first go.

And the trans issue will also be taken to another shop, specifically a shop that has worked on plenty of RE7 automatics from the Patrol.

Ok, cool. It’ll be different this time.
