2011 6mt died when coming to a stop, wont start

hello all,

was driving the z last night, and noticed a rattling coming when under 1/8th-1/4th throttle. also noticed oil temps slowly going up towards 240 (unusual when cruising at 80 on the highway), so pulled over to the side of the road, and just as i was about to come to a stop, the car died. attempted to start, but the started would click, and not turn over, and the SES light remained on. no codes that my reader could catch. called a tow, attempted to get a jump, but still nothing.

the worrying thing is the fact that there was barely any oil on the dipstick. this is odd since when i checked about 1500mi ago, it was slightly under the midpoint of h and l. i find it hard to believe the engine ate that much oil in 1500mi, and its only been 3k since my last oil change.

car is currently at the dealer, waiting to be looked at. in the mean time, does anyone have an idea of what could have happened? im already thinking worst case, and looking at used engines :crying:

Death rattle. Do you have an oil cooler on the Z?

Spooler 11-10-2018 06:16 PM

Sounds like it is done.

unfortunately, it is. lots of metal in the oil, according to dealer. looks like something caused it to burn 1qt of oil in 3k miles.

now, i need to decide whether im better off selling it w/ a blown engine or getting it replaced.

Your car was at the dealership for a limp mode diagnosis just 1.5 month ago, you think they messed up something? Kinda hard to imagine something like this was already developing and didn’t cause any red flag while they were fixing your car.

Sorry, seems like these couple of months haven’t treated you well.

i dont think so. that was because they crushed the cam position sensor during the reinstall of the transmission after the shop replaced the csc. i noticed no oil leaks under the car after that, so i dont think its from there.

dealer said there was a lot of oil on the rh valve cover, which is weird, as iv never noticed it before, and when i replaced my plugs about 2 months ago, i didnt see anything.

just for an FYI, I replaced my motor in my g for 4300. got a used 2015 z motor for a little over 1k$ with just under 20k miles on it, got it installed at specialty z. it's not too expensive to get it done. only reason I did it was because I have the car paid off and didn't want to get into another car payment.

If your budget allows it, look around for a VR30DDTT. Lot's of rain in the PNW so wrecked Q's should not be do difficult to come by.

My condolences. Nightmare scenarios like this are why I check my oil every other day.

Not in any way making a diagnosis of the situation, but it would take a whole lot more than the loss of 1 quart of oil to destroy an engine. Especially as it was still on the dipstick. Something else was definitely the culprit and I'd love to hear the consensus.

What year was the Z? If one of the earlier years, oil galley gaskets perhaps?

this is my current plan, considering the labor for replacing the engine comes to $2600, which i find surprising, especially at a dealer.

my plan is to get a decent condition used motor, a better clutch, headers, and an exhaust and get all that installed while theyre replacing the motor.

Rusty 11-13-2018 07:17 PM

What year motor? Newer years have the updated gaskets.

Sorry to hear that. Used motors in good shape can run up to $1700. Make sure to have a water pump and galley gaskets installed before they put it in the car. Just a little insurance.
