Caliper torque specs

Anyone care to chime in

dts3 09-14-2018 07:45 PM

If you can't get them locally at AutoZone (or Home Depot?) Then rock auto will probably have them

dts3 09-14-2018 08:26 PM

Sorry about that... I was reading it on my phone and I didn't notice you want the bolts that close the calipers. I just painted the heads on mine yesterday. If you can't find a generic replacement at Home Depot, you may have to hit up the dealership. I thought I remember a thread here where someone bought a few of them from the dealership.

Good luck

McMaster-Carr has something similar in 60 and 70mm lengths. Mabe as a last resort you can get a 70 and trim off 5mm. I'm not that brave personally, but it's an option.

In the "JIS High-Strength Steel Flanged Hex Head Screws" section

I bought the McMaster 60mm for a last resort. I found the bolts but I have to buy 100 or 8 bolts for 100 bucks. My worry is clamping force of the McMaster bolts. I’m tracking the car, if it was only street driven I wouldn’t worry about it.

Everything is the same besides the flanged head and length.

Try Pro Bolt. I used them for my motorcycle when I installed the Brembo calipers.

Look at the top of the bolt heads for marks indicating the grade of the bolt. If the grades are the same, you're good to go.

Tensile strength is half that of the oem bolt.

Elmo,

I'm headed up to the dealership a little later this morning. I rounded the caliper mounting bolts up front more than I'd have liked, so I'm sourcing a couple extra. I'll ask about these bolts as well while I'm there.

Thanks james. Worst come to worse I’m just do 70mm bolts with a 5mm shim

Elmo370z 09-15-2018 09:44 AM

I don’t know why this bolt is so hard to find

JARblue 09-15-2018 10:18 AM

As expected, I can confirm the dealer only sells those bolts as part of the caliper assembly.

What shims would you use?

Something that will withstand the heat of the brakes. Sure somebody sells it online, unlike these holy grail
Of bolts.

Rusty 09-15-2018 10:21 PM

Question? What happen to the other bolts?

If you have a grinder. You can grind down the bolts to length. If you don't want to do that. And want to use a shim. Any mild steel washer will work.

I don’t trust myself to use a grinder.

SouthArk370Z 09-16-2018 09:13 AM

I'd just cut it to length with a band saw or hack saw and then dress the cut end with a grinder or file. YMMV

That’s just for the rears. Might have to buy front as well.

He had a Hulk moment. He's my parts hoarding protege so if he gets all those bolts at least I have spares available if I ever need it.

Did the bolts from post #6 not work, or are you just still looking for the exact same ones?

Followed the stupid diy on the forum, over torqued them to 80ft lbs.

They are but 5mm shorter then oem. I have a track day in 3 weeks. I don’t want to risk anything backing out, or second guessing anything.

If it was just a street drag car I would worry about it.

I see no reason to not use the JIS screws you have selected from McMaster-Carr as long as the flange heads fit. Just cut them to size as suggested. Its pretty hard to mess it up honestly.
When installing, just make sure the male and female threads are clean, as well as the bottom of screw head and its mating surface on the caliper so that the amount of preload on the fastener is consistent with the torque value you decide on.

Edit: With the larger flange heads, this will cause a slightly higher percentage of the tightening torque to be used in overcoming the friction under the flange head so to achieve the same amount of preload as oem you would probably tighten them to a slightly higher torque value.

Not risky my life for something that hadn’t been tested. I’m sure the 5mm difference won’t be a issues but I’m not willing to chance it. I’ll give them to you to try for a season on the track. If they work for you I’ll gladly order another set to install myself.
