2017 370z Nismo Oil Temps (apology in advance!!)

Hey guys,

First post and I already know I am about to open the can of worms with the oil temp question haha..I have a 2017 370z Nismo with 1,000 miles on her..totally in love with this car and I haven't even gone WOT yet since I'm strictly following break in.

I have not seen any posts discussing oil temps on newer 2015+ Z's, especially Nismo models. I know all the components of the cars for the last 10 years are relatively the same across the board, and the oil coolers are not the greatest, however I still wanted to get some thoughts on my situation. So without further ado...lets get nuts...:rofl2:

What oil temp are you hitting on an average day cruising...Yesterday it was only 72ish here and I was hitting 220 on the way home (Highway driving 65mph, nothing above 4k, definitely some stop and go, 50min give or take commute) ...From what I hear the car starts to pull timing at 230..So if I'm hitting 220 driving like a granny..I can only think I'm going to be hitting 250+ driving on the aggressive side.. I mentioned to my service advisor when she went in for her first 6month oil change that the car feels sluggish in the afternoon compared to the power I'm slapping down first thing in the morning...not sure if this is more attributed to higher air intake temps since the car is sitting in the sun all day or higher than normal oil temps under "mild" driving...Again not trying to be a pain but its hard not to obsess a little when you paid 40k and are not out of break in yet. Thoughts??

Thanks guys!!

I've got a 2015 Nismo, and before I made some changes to the exhaust, in 70-75 degree temps I think it topped around 205-210 at constant highway speeds. It would also warm up fairly quickly to operating temps.

A few weeks ago I removed the cats and replaced with ART pipes, and put in the Garageline X and Mid-pipe combo, retaining the stock HKS muffler. Now, even in 90-degree temps, it never goes over 205, and it takes much longer to reach operating temps.

I don't know for certain, but does Nissan put in break-in oil from the factory...which is what gets changed out in the first oil change? If so, the extra friction might account for the increased temps. I would hope that your dealership replaced with synthetic oil -- I would check this. These engines really need the benefits of synthetic to operate at spec.

At any rate, compared with mine, you are running hot. Are there variances in the temperature sensors, and could both our cars be running identically? Perhaps. Unfortunately, your only choice for an aftermarket oil cooler is the 34-row, which would be overkill in your case.

I would check with your dealership, and see if there is a service bulletin on this issue. Be sure to report back what you find!

Well I just called the dealership. They said the oil they use in the Nismo is the same oil that is used for the GTR so no concerns there. As far as normal operating temperature they said they will investigate and get back to me.

I am about to get hit with the generic answer from the manual: "Oil temperature, as well as the rate of temperature change, will vary based on ambient conditions and driving patterns. Under normal operating conditions, oil temperature will remain below 280F (1408C) ."

Mine routinely gets up to 220 - keep in mind since the OEM cooler uses engine coolant you will never get below 200 like the guys who have put in air coolers...

I wouldn't worry about it - just switch to a high quality synthetic oil after breakin and enjoy the ride.

The car gets hot. It's well documented - no need to start a thread. If you are worried about the temps or plan to drive the car at higher RPMs for any sustained period, then get a real oil cooler.

No, they don't use the same oil from the factory.
  • GTR calls for M1 0W40 (European Version). And GTR comes with a real oil cooler.
  • Our car's default fill is just whatever 5w30.

Don't worry about your oil temperature if you are just commuting. Our car has the same 3.7 V6 as a bundle of other Infiniti models that don't even come with oil temp gauge. G37, Q50 3.7, FX37/QX70, M37/Q70....

Thanks for the replies..again I know the cars run hot. I am just trying to make sure there is nothing wrong with my car this early in the game. From feedback I have gotten it seems like I'm running too hot for the temp/load I'm putting on the vehicle. I spoke with a fellow Z Nismo owner and he said he only sees 220 after doing b2b 0-60 runs. Im at about 1k miles..not sure if there is still some increased friction since its so new which will level off after the car is fully broken in.

Again guys, Im definitely not complaining here..its just hard not to have questions when you shell out 40k and are not out of break in yet...

Your situation sounds perfectly normal to me. 370Zs tend to run on the warm side. Stop and go traffic makes things worse. Car will limit power if oil temp gets too high. Get an oil cooler if the "high" temps bother you.

The loss of power in the afternoon may be due to high IAT. IIRC, the car starts limiting power in the mid-80s degrees F. Most OBD readers will show IAT.

FWIW, most oils are good up to 300 degrees F. Not that you'd want to run the engine that hot, but the oil would take it.

There is no problem with your oil temp.

This is where having an oil temp gauge (aka more information) actually causes confusions.

Koz1614 05-17-2018 07:53 AM

I am really at a loss here fellas. Im trying to put this oil thing to rest but my commute this morning has me thinking otherwise.

• Drive begins at 7:15 (55 degrees) (140 oil temp)
• 7:20 in town driving…car reaches temp (180 oil temp)
• 7:30 on the highway 60mph @2500rpm 6th gear. (200 oil temp)
• 7:45 highway slows to stop and go traffic 20 mph 2nd gear (205 oil temp)
• 8:00 near standstill traffic (220 oil temp)
• 8:15 fully moving again 60mph @2500rmp 6th gear (210 oil temp)
• 8:25 park at work (205 oil temp)

I am just shocked that I hit 220 in sub 60 degree temps. Yes it was moderate to heavy traffic but I have no idea if there is reason for concern. The A/C was on and off to clear the window of some fog but the difference in oil temp was insignificant from what I could tell. Not really sure if there is cause for concern here or something wrong with the vehicle...

Jayhovah 05-17-2018 08:50 AM

There is nothing wrong with the vehicle. You oil cooler uses the engine coolant for cooling so there are two factors at play in the temp of your oil - the amount of heat you are putting into it from driving, and the amount your oil can be cooled by the coolant. You hit 220 in traffic because the radiator doesn't work as effectively at a stand still... the radiator cools the coolant, the coolant cools the oil.

Don't be. Most modern engines run "hot."

There is not. As others have tried to tell you, 220 F oil temp is not high. The engine will handle it and the oil will handle it. Drive it like you stole it. :driving:

Good lord....

Putting my 9 month old girl to sleep seems easy in comparison.

Koz1614 05-17-2018 09:50 AM

Thanks fellas! Ill :gtfo2: now haha..

I also have 2017 Nismo Tech M/T. We hit 86F last week and I got up to 230 on oil temp. City and Hwy, some stop and go. Never got higher.

Did not notice power loss. I also run 94 Octane, so that may help a little.

As for oil. As another poster mentioned, GTR oil is not same. However, it's not just any 5w30 for our Z's. Per the book, you SHOULD use Esther oil. Either the Nissan cool-aid (good for keeping warranty hassle free) or REDLINE 5W30.

Not to say you cannot use any good synthetic 5w30, if you do your homework, you will see that our engine has coatings (DLC or Diamond Like Coating) that are supposed to work with TRUE synthetic Esther oils. https://www.nissan-global.com/EN/TEC...RVIEW/dlc.html

The brand of oil or quantity of oil will not affect your temperature. Just keep maintained.

Otherwise, your temps are fine.
