Drivetrain Issue. Needing Input!

Hey fellas,
I've had my Z up on jackstands working on the brakes, and just this last weekend, I was underneath it, checking everything out, looking for any issues.. I came across this. I'm hoping some of you veterans can help me out.

As I was working my way from the front of the car, to the rear, just past the transmission bell housing, I noticed a tremendous amount of black particles, almost like soot, as I started to wipe away some of it, I noticed that a rubber grommet/seal was 85% completely obliterated (this was the black particles, come to find out) and was spread out everywhere in the general area. It was like the rubber had been dropped in a blender.

See pics.

My question is, what was it? Do I need to get it replaced? Should I be alarmed?

That's the bottom of the shifter. Hang on while I check mine.

You are correct. It is the bottom of the shifter, and it has a larger rubber boot over it to prevent water and other stuff from getting to the shifter bushing. I would replace it.

OEM Shifter Dust Boot <--Well I was looking for a picture for you, and this was the best I could find.

Yes. It will help keep dirt out.

Probably not. But keep a close eye on the replacement for a while.

You could tear easy when changing to a short shifter, or changing out the clutch. Age can get to them. Your's is gone, so I don't know.

dude. no short shifter, however I did have AAM upgrade my clutch/flywheel and csc a few years ago.. and again, the car only has 11k miles.. this is crazy. If its not one thing, its something else.

So I'm gonna try to find the part, and hopefully get it replaced.
