tapping noise at idle
I tried searching, but does anyone remember if there was a TSB for this issue, getting the tapping noise after long trips, but as soon as I turn the engine off and right back on again the noise stops completely and engine goes back to running smoothly.

Anyone?

Oil? What type of oil are you using? I know that most do not want to hear it but Nissan recommends Nissan Ester oil to eliminate engine tapping noise in the Z. Just saying.

mine had a little valve train noise from new,,put in redline 5w30and it is quiet now...think u are using the best oil already
|
Try some Nissan Ester at your next change. Might help; might not.

I could have sworn i saw a tsb on this noise, but try as i might i cant find it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Excuse the video quality, but this is the tapping I am talking about and what it's doing....
|
Also wanted to add that I've done a little digging around the G37 forums and have seen quite a few of them suggest servicing the oil galley gaskets as it seems on the earlier vq37's there is an issue with the gaskets that made oil pressure drop low enough to set off this condition. going to be swapping out my water pump this next weekend anyways so i'll try it out and update you guys if that resolves the tapping issue.

Yeah that does not sound good. I can hear the tapping noise on mine but it’s probably 60-70% quieter than that.

I’ve seen a few other videos on youtube floating around that have the exact same noise, but neither the poster of the videos or any of the people responding to the video seem to ever say whether they solved the issue or not Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Does the noise go away when you put the car in gear? Sometimes my car makes a similar noise when I get home (I use a carport and frequently drive with windows open, so get a lot of engine noise bounce) but it seems transmission related as it goes away when I engage the transmission. In my case I think it is a matter of the harmonics of a low rpm idle from a warm engine and the characteristics of the transmission/clutch elements.

I’ve challenged the same thing, but in my case it was cracked pulley. So inspect yours, before you pick up heads
Don’t buy/install NST pulley https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink?sha...0&share_type=t |

Tapping seems to be related to oil pressure in my case as when i rev the engine there is no tapping, but as soon as it settles back down to idle where oil pressure is lower when things are warmed up it starts tapping. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
You need to install a oil pressure gauge. If you get one. Make sure it reads to 150.psi.

Will look into it, right now just concerned with switching out the oil gallery gaskets....still cant believe nissan went with paper for the original design on those lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

damn, thats noisy..almost as bad as my dodge ram cummins:}

Hey op, is the noise coming from the back of the right side cylinder head? I can't view the video at work.
|
Damn man it's starting to seem like your having every issue possible with your Z.

Seems to switch from right to left sometimes, but yeah most often from the top right of the rear of the engine Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Seems like it, but most of them are small issues that just piled up from previous owner neglect. I’ve resolved the majority of them, it’s just little things like this and the water pump that are left to sort out. Water pump is being taken care of this weekend P. S. Think i may have found what was semi stalling the engine....not sure how it got there, but there was a 1/4 inch sized hole in the bank 2 air intake resonator. Patched it up and engine seems much happier now Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I think if it was an oil pressure issue you would possibly have advance and retard issue for the intake cam since they are driven by oil pressure. Hope this helps, I can only do so much over the interwebs. |

That might explain the fuel odors I’ve been smelling then if it is the purge valve lol Just to clarify though, is it the pcv valves at the front if the engine you’re talking about or the actual purge valve on the canister? Cause i replaced pcv with new oem like a month ago Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Nevermind, think i know what you’re talking about....it’s that stupid valve on the back of the upper intake manifold isnt it?

What dread mentioned is making sense too, I’ve been getting that ticking/tapping noise for quite a while now and if evap purge valve is the cause it would also contribute to the fuel trim issue as well from what information I’ve gathered Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Gotcha, thanks for that info! Damn didnt know such a small thing could be so loud lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
This may sound really obvious and I’m sure you’ve already checked but is your oil low? Low oil will cause those lifters to be loud as hell
|
Check your oil level.

First thing i checked :) also i did as dread said and it is the purge valve that is making that noise. Feel it pulsing everytime it “taps” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
