Car Died While Driving, Now Will Not Start. No Codes.
Hi all, been a lurker on this forum since I got my Z last year. Used a lot of the DIY's for springs and other minor troubleshooting, but now I have this issue.
I searched the forum/web on this one, tried multiple methods/fixes (outlined below), still will not start. Here's how it started... I'm from AZ, so no real weather conditions here this time of year, But I was driving in the morning to work and about a mile in, the just car died, the symptoms made it feel like I just ran out of gas (electronics still on). I had a full tank though. Just add this tid-bit, it was after a right turn, but I was a red light. I didn't accelerate hard out of the turn so I don't believe this to be an issue. I towed it back to my house, got my battery tested just in case. It was low, but got I it charged and put it back in but no success. I did buy some starter fluid and this made it seem like the car wanted to turn over a bit more, but never fully started. Considering, that the starter fluid helped somewhat, I ended up replacing the fuel pump, with the newer version, mine is an 09. The old pump's housing seemed a bit damaged since one of the rods (non-spring) was hanging lower. I put in the whole new assembly (OEM), but still no dice.I feel resistance on my fuel line to the engine bay when the car is turned on and I hear the fuel pump kick on as well. At this point, I am leaning on that this is actually not a fuel related issue. Checked the appropriate fuses, all is good. Unfortunately, no codes as well. This can't be the key issue since I am actually getting a crank result. Any idea of what I should take a look for next? 09 base, no mods recently done to car. Only mods at the moment are intake/exhaust. Thanks in advance! |
new battery is a cheap fix, if thats the problem...maybe alt isnt charging, they can check that too.

Ck. Ignition Spark...gotta have fire in the wire.
fuel/compression/spark & correct timing. |
I did end up trying a new battery just in case and same unfortunately. I read a lot on cam position sensor having issues, but since I had no codes, I didn't worry about it. I ended up removing the sensors and I got codes so I suspect that the OBD2 reader is functioning properly.

Crank position sensor? If you are sure you have spark and fuel, then I would check that next. They can go out and not give any codes.

Sorry to hear this man, hope it all works out.

I would go ahead and change it. Very inexpensive part but extremely hard to diagnose without specialized equipment. Most people just change it out. I believe it’s located in the rear of the engine, passenger side. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Fuel pump, fuel pump hat (breaking) and intank hoses are a common problem. Check your fuel pressure.
|
I'd check fuel pressure then try the crank sensor. Like posted above crank sensors can be a pain to diagnose.

Thank you for advise above. I bought the Z1 adapter plate with the gauge earlier this week and got yesterday. I installed it and got 40 psi, so I should be good to go. I am planning to grab a new crank sensor from Nissan today so I will throw that in and let you know how it goes.

Just throwing this out there since my Honda back in the day did this. Can it be a bad main relay? Clutch relay?

Currently waiting for my crank sensor to come in. I double checked every fuse with a multimeter just incase. So as of right now just praying it is the crank.

Update:
So I ended up replacing the crank sensor. Before I put the new one in though, I attempted to start the car with it off and it started right up. I put the new one in and unfortunately no start. Any thoughts of where to try next? Is it timing issue? Thanks! |
