Redline vs Royal Purple Transmission/Differential Oil
 

Hi guys,

I've noticed that most people who have changed transmission/differential oil have used Redline MT-90 75W90.

How about Royal Purple Max-Gear for the transmission/differential on our Z's..??

I've always had better results with RedLine for the trany and diff. However I don't have any formal proof on that analysis (just personal feeling...).
Ps. I use RoyalPurple in my 370 engine!

I would use Redline if you are driving the car on the street.

Only time I would suggest Royal Purple is to a race team that would be rebuilding the diff every season or every race.

Royal purple is very very thin. You want thicker gear oil.

That being said, that is why a lot of people see slight horsepower gains with Royal Purple, because it is so thin that it offers little resistance.

Redline is the way to go, just my personal preferance

I run royal purple in my engine. Just swapped to royal purple in my tranny. Don't like it. Did a track event and transmission shifted just fine, however on cold startup it is difficult to engage the tranny. Once it warms up everything is fine. Going to give Redline a shot.

ok so getting close to needing another oil change... red line or royal purple... been useing royal for awhile solved the temp problem... what about red line for daily driveing.. or is mobil 1 a better go?

Redline is perfect for DD. I am running Redline engine oil and MT 90 in the trans. I will probably do the diff soon.

The old Mobil 1 used to be the best bet. However, a few years ago Mobil 1 removed the Ester in their oils in an effort to keep their prices competitive in the market place.

Ester based oils are very important in NISSAN engine's. Without it you can develop a drive train tick that may not go away after your next oil change. The good thing with the Redline oil is that it is an Ester based oil. Redline is a bit more expensive than Mobil 1 but in my opinion, it's worth it.

In regards to Royal Purple, we did a test with it a few years ago. We put a vehicle on our dyno and performed a baseline dyno. Then drained all of the fluids, engine, trans, differential and did a complete fluid swap. We found a 15 horsepower gain!!! We were all blown away. However, I wouldn't run it on a street car that I wanted a long life span out of. It just seems like anything that thin would not be able to offer the protection I would want for a car that I plan on keeping for awhile.

With the 300ZX, we have a common issue with the syncros in 4th gear. At higher rpms, dropping into 4th can be very difficult and comes with a clunking sound. I didn't have any issue with this running redline, but after I switched to royal purple for a few months it was became very prevelent.

IMO, I'm more of a fan of Redline, but royal purple is better than most brands and its to find than Redline.

Amsoil did the same thing on my 350z 07 6mt transmission. I went back to factory and it was fine.

iv never had to use anything other then 5w 30 in my cars so something new throws me off a bit...
