Oil:Water Cooler
 

Alright guys I have a 11 Nismo and am looking to get a hold of my oil temps. after much reading I had decided to go with a 34 row air cooler but after a long dinner convo with my GF's dad who works on composite formula cars he said I should go with a Oil:Water heat exchanger. after finding next to nothing about this for the 370z I did come across the AAM R-Line kit but I personally think that it is very over priced and with little reviews or experiences to read about im not convinced. I do know that I can put together the same kit with a bigger core for less money and it be just as good if not better. I also can get my hands on the Cores that my GF's dad uses. the issue there is plumbing (theirs is much bigger.. would have to change coolant flow route). If using a Oil:Water kit regardless of how I do it, would the stock radiator/cooling system be enough to take on this extra heat? Water is a much better source for transferring heat and if I am correct, a Oil:Water cooling system will not only get the car to operating temp faster but it will keep it at the coolant temp which is not much above 200 degrees. do anyone have any feedback on any sort of Oil:Water system they have used or seen other than the garbage stock 2012 system that clearly does nothing? I currently don't track my car but would like to in the future. I currently average around 220-240 degrees on normal/interstate driving and that or more during spirited driving. below are links to the kits and cores I am talking about. i agree, water is a much better dissapator(spelling?) of heat than oil.

Was talked about a few ago.

A video with it in use.

Not sure why you would pay more than double for it when you can piece it together with the core you linked too and a sandwich plate and lines. Just my 2 cents.

Well I can get a oil:water core for free but size is the problem with the free one.. (CR racing one). Sorry about the spelling was trying to post before I left work real quick.

OP, you're right that a oil/water oil cooler will perform better than the air/oil coolers many of us are running. Almost went the route of custom oil/water cooler myself but when it came down to it, the ease of an OTS kit outweighed the advantages of a custom oil/water oil cooler setup. If you haven't already learned, the biggest problem with our cars is that there are very few OTS options for performance parts.

If you do go down the oil/water road you might also look at Laminova cores.

Would there be any issues with the cars coolant system over heating with the added strain of a oil:water oil cooler?

I used a setrab series 1 72 row oil cooler and threw the sandwich plate on the stock water unit. When the car is in motion, it does budge past 180 around town. Even semi aggressive driving doesn't move it. It's placed directly in front for maximum airflow. And I got it to fit with my Nismo damper... With a lot of work and effort.

With nobody using these other than maybe a couple race teams, there's not really any data to say for sure. Personally, I'd just upgrade the radiator to ensure I wasn't going to cook anything.

Your dad is right*. Water is a much better conductor of heat and when you are making a formula car and weight and space are at an extreme premium it is a better solution.

*However we are in a production car where we really are not too concerned about ever gram of weight and have plenty of space to work with. So the more practical solution and cost effective is what you see everyone using.

My original thought was to use the free core and get a water cooled system for very little but that required a lot of customization so I started looking into building a kit that was similar to the AAM kit. AAM seems to think the water cooled is a better way of cooling the oil especially if you plan to go FI which I may in the future. Just figured id get a few more opinions on the two..
