Z won't start!

So my 2011 is having some issues. It will not start and the key indicator light will sporatically illuminate. I had it towed to my house to work on it. I tried disconnecting the battery to reset the computer, getting new batteries for my fob and no luck. To make matters worse, every time i got in and out of my drivers side door, the window falls down a few inches. So now my window is completely down and my car won't start. Any suggestions???

jchammond 12-24-2016 02:29 AM

Relearn the drivers window by rolling it all the way down & then hold the switch while rolling up,,,continue to hold up on the switch an additional 3secs. (be seated in car)
Will your car start with the normal key-placed in the slot on left side of dashboard?
Check your battery surface charge & loadtest...may have failed battery.
Get battery's for both key fob's
keep posting updates,,,as other member's will help you trouble-shoot this issue.

Also being an 11' / may be a good time for battery replacement (if hasn't been done)
I replaced mine 5yrs. from build date...it didn't fail; but needed a battery for my lawnmower & it works well for that.
I elected to go with a strong, full sized Optima battery (9935red) as I didn't want to have a failure w/a lighter small battery.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...6d21c19c77.jpg

Up till around the may 2011 production run they did, june and after production runs deleted the steering lock. At least my old 2011 with a production month of june did not have the steering lock

Montana370Z 12-24-2016 12:50 PM

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I'm going to try getting a new battery as it has been pretty cold here lately. Will relearning the windows work even though the car won't start? I'm really hopin its not the steering lock as i know how expensive that can be

kenchan 12-24-2016 01:02 PM

do u even have the steering lock? just peek under the steering column. dis is wat it looks like from the bottom.

as long as the ignition is on,windows will work.......got me thinking if mine has that steering lock.
I would almost have to say yes without looking-as i do notice sometimes the steering wheel will twitch when ignition is powered up.

steering wheel lock fa sho.

jchammond 12-25-2016 07:12 PM

Montana,,,looking over a few different threads on this issue & you may be able to tap on the steering lock box/module,while simultaneously pressing start button on Z.
In the event that it starts-then you can remove the fuse in the exterior fuse block nearest to the fender (by battery).
i'm guessing this leaves it in an un-lock position & shouldn't fail...?
Other's Please feel free to add to this,as i own an 11' with the steering lock & haven't had any issues;but certainly don't want any.
I would be the one to pull the whole column out & remove/bypass/fabricate as needed to eliminate this part.
Just piggy-backing on Montana's no-start thread.
TY, & hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!

It leaves the locking pin retracted but does not guarantee that the electronics won't eventually fail. It kills power to the motor that moves the pin but leaves the electronics powered up. So far, I have seen no reports of the electronics failing.
See link in my sig for more details.

Montana370Z 12-25-2016 09:14 PM

Thank you for the latest info--I'm gonna give that a shot. Do I have to get the car at least started before I take out that fuse? Or is it ok to just try that step first?

MX52Z 12-25-2016 09:46 PM

The car has to start first.

I love Kalispell! Unfortunate transplanted Missoulian here..

jchammond 12-26-2016 01:12 AM

It has to at least be in the accessory mode (switched on without holding brakes) or hold brake & let it start...I seen a couple video clips of people doing this on YouTube.
If key fob battery & engine battery are both good; and the door locks work with the fob & icon of key is illuminated in dashboard (thinking in tachometer gauge cluster),,,then highly likely yours has failed.
They recommend wiggling the steering column a bit & gently tapping the box ( kinds like tapping on an old starter back in the day or a gas tank,to make fuel pump turn on)... hope all of this helps & you don't have to spend a small fortune on it!

jchammond 12-26-2016 01:18 AM

As before, Others please feel free to jump in; as I haven't personally experienced this issue as of yet.
Montana; you may want to identify & slide up fuse block first-so you will know exactly where the fuse is...and heck,it may be blown...haven't heard that mentioned yet.
Good luck. ✌️

I powered up my ignition & removed fuse (preventive medicine).
I haven't had any issues & can visualizing removing lock assembly and modifying it to work.
If you're charting the Z's; mine's an 11' Base/Touring Auto w/75,604mi.
Everything seems to be working,,,except you don't hear the steering lock slide noise.
Montana370; Keep us updated.

Montana370Z 12-27-2016 03:36 PM

Tried tapping the box and to no avail :( Called Nissan to see if theres a recall on my car and no luck. He said he has seen this on the Altima's and they run about $900, so yippee. Gonna take a look at the fuse and see if that's the problem...

No, no, no. That's not gonna do it. Beat it like it owes you money. Seriously, I mean beat the ever loving $hit out of it.

I'm a slightly new Z owner the past few month. What exactly does steering lock do? Why does Nissan install it?

it's an electrical actuated device that puts a mechanical lock on the steering column,,,in the event of theft,etc.....Old school vehicles had them actuated by the key switch on the column.
They had a clock type washer underneath steering wheel, that a pin would retract in-when the key was switched back to off position.
Nissan has this underneath column, mounted in the box shown on page 1 of this thread.
if you have your key fob in hand & don't press brake pedal...press start button & you can hear/feel it unlock the steering wheel.
Like a Safety Device.

Great news! After replacing the fuse and that not working, I tried the hammering way. Got under the dash with a rubber mallet and hit the steerling lock box while hitting the ignition and boom it turned on! Pretty happy, saved me about $1000!

Glad to hear it worked out for you!

jchammond 12-29-2016 02:38 PM

Hopefully you removed fuse after it unlocked.

jchammond 12-30-2016 04:46 AM

First trip out since removing steering lock fuse & very noticeable sound difference when starting,,,,,no sliding/click noise!
I often wondered what that sound was;but now i know.
