Rear Inner Axle Boot TORN. Salvage-able??
 

Hey guys. Had a problem this last weekend driving back from Vegas to SoCal.
When I got to vegas I started hearing a clicking under load, so I didnt push the car at all, Just parked it checked into my hotel and was done with it.

For the drive back I went 80mph tops the whole way back ~260 miles, Clicking from time to time.

Got back and noticed this.
Axle Boot Torn

Is it possible If I replace the inner boot I can save the axle? Or I am S.O.L.? Is there any way to determine If i can save this axle? I really dont want to have to dish out 900$ for an axle :shakes head:

If you have gone to the point of the axle making clicking sounds it is more than likely too late.

Based on the picture, that boot has been torn for a long time. There's rust on the spider of the CV joint. Time to pony up the $$$ for a new axle and call this a lesson in regular inspection of the underside of your car.



The other option is to sign the title over to me and deliver it by transport to KS. Anyone that would drive 80 mph with an unknown clicking noise in the rear end probably doesn't need to be driving anything more than an Escort.... :shakes head:



You ever seen what happens to a car when a rear drive axle lets go? :eek:

As a side note: I found the axle on Amazon for under $200. It's a Cardone unit. The $900 price looks to be dealer installed.

Thats what I was assuming. I had looked under neath just before I went Didnt see anything but must've had a leak, but saw no grease or anything. Thanks for the help though. are you able to send me that link for the new axle?

Amazon says it's the right rear axle. It shouldn't be too hard to find the left one.

Anyone know if the automatic axle will fit my 6 speed fine? Since they are doing the same job. They just come up as different part numbers

I don't know how you missed grease from a torn CV axle boot. The grease gets slung above and below its location. If you would have caught it sooner you probably could have replaced the torn boot and repacked it with grease.
