Spun bearing – help

Does anyone have experience with a spun bearing on the z?

How much does it cost to rebuild? Is it cheaper to rebuild going to a machine shop, or buying a short block (I see stage 1’s for ~$2800 online).

If I buy a short block, is it as simple as throwing the head back on and call it a day or does the head need to be inspected by the machine shop as well?

Anything else to look out for?

I just want to keep the costs as low as possible, which means I’m keeping it N/A and looking to maintain long-term reliability.

How did you spin a bearing? And how do you know you spun a bearing?

It depends on how much you damaged the block when you spun the bearing. You won't know for sure until you tear it down. A cast iron block from back in The Good Old Days could take a lot of abuse; not so much a newer Aluminum block.

In any case, I'd have the head inspected while you have it off. Same for the crank, manifolds, oil pump, &c. If you're going to the trouble and expense of a rebuild, why take a chance on using warped, worn, or otherwise defective parts?

just saw a garage show with spun bearing,,,,their engine spun one,,usually from lack of oil, wrong type oil or never changing it

Buying online will be "cheaper" from the start it may seem but all the additional parts will add up quickly. If the motor is coming apart, sending the heads to a qualified machine shop is a must in my eyes (Also, make sure you find one that is familiar with the VHR as the VVEL system is very easy to screw up if they dont know what they are doing)

With the engine apart, I would replace all timing components with new (Water pump, chains, guides, tensioners, etc) Upgraded Oil Galley gaskets, and a re-freshed or Nismo Oil pump.

Do you plan to have a shop do the work? If so I would contact one you trust to get a quote on pricing.

Also remember, buying an engine online limits your support. They are not going to be able to support your purchase as well as a shop can in most cases.
