09 open diff rear destroyed

As the title says my open diff in my 09 base is shot. I have z1 building me a complete bolt in diff with 4.08 gears and a wavetrac rear and I ordered their z1 intake while I was at it. I should have everything installed Friday. I'll post a review.

Interested in hearing about the wavetrac

What were you doing when it broke and how many miles?

1loud370z 07-14-2016 07:51 AM

2009 base non sport with 30k. I'm running 305 bridgestone re11 in the rear so I have lots of grip, which I just don't think my stock rear could handle. I actually launched the car pretty hard against a friends srt8 challenger from a dig. I killed him out of the whole but unfortunately I also killed my rear haha.

:iagree:

Pretty hard to break an open diff.

Well I have successfully broken mine. It was obviously the weakest link in my drivetrain and it decided to let go. My new wavetrac w 4.08 gears are being overnighted today, and I'll install everything tomorrow.

i have a base model as well and swap out my diff for 4.08 w/ quaife LSD and i must say well worth the mod. going on now for almost a yr with no issues. keep your old gears in case u decided to go turbo down the road.

Got the z1 intake and the new rear in the car this afternoon. Took about 4 hours for everything. What a night and day difference in acceleration and the way the power is put down. I gave z1 a call 9 am wed. and i had my new rear delivered around noon today. Thank god for overnight shipping. Huge shout out and thanks to z1 motorsports for making it happen in such a short notice

I don't think the stock differential can break just by launching ours cars (I have a sport so I don't know if the LSD differential is the same)

My differential was an open diff as I have the base model non sport and no srm. We were able to spin my drive shaft almost over half a turn before anything else would grab. I didn't pull the old cover off yet that'll be this weekend.

It will be interesting to see what failed. Can't see it failing without a clutch upgrade. Anything done to the diff before? How about the diff bushings?

1loud370z 07-21-2016 05:56 AM

The center diff bushing in the rear subframe had a little tear but was still filled with fluid. The two on the sides were good. After removal of the diff. cover I noticed I busted teeth off of both pinion side gears and off the gears directly connected to them. Looks like a stock open diff. On the inside.
