Noobie Question: What to worry about with my 370z 7AT upgrades?
Hi,
This is my first post here even I have a lot of time in this forum. right to the point, I have a 2009 7AT NA 370Z which I use for Daily drive, spirit drive in highways (of course safety) and like to go to Drag some times (13.5 Secs all stock), I live in the Caribbean so high temps mostly 36 to 40 C. now I will update Z with the following mods: 1- G3 Stillen Intakes with dry filters. 2- AT Cooler from Stillen 3- 34 row Oil Cooler from Z1 Motorsports 4- Stillen Lightweight underdrive pulley 5- Nismo Exaust 6- ART Pipes by Motordyne 7- Uprev tunner Kit 8- New OEM Spark Plugs 9- New Nismo Oil Filter At this point my car has a littler bit more than 61K Miles so here comes my questions: 1- Based on this configuration, what kind of advice can you give or worry about these mods? 2- Even I read a lot of Stillen Pulley, I still not clear if it will hurt my Engine or not based on my config.? 3- Do i need to change the timing belt? can any one recomends me all i need to buy (timing change, tensor, ??)? 4-Also do the new Tranny oil cooler, i will flush the actual oil and apply a new one, specific the Motul ATF VI. It this is OK or do i need to doit in another way? 5- as I will use Uprev to take the best perfom of my mods, any advise or something do I should consider in terms of security or tell my tuner to watch out? 6-Based on what i read in this forum, Should i expect around 50HP more in my car without hurting nothing, maybe be in the high 12 Secs in drag? 7- Anything that i might missing? I will really appreciate your comments because I will start to work the car during next week. Thanks! :driving: |
Before you start swapping parts, download and look over the FSM (link in my sig). Also review the many excellent DIYs on this and other sites before starting a job.
I wouldn't get the underdrive pulley for a DD. Gains are small and there is some risk. Refilling the transmission to the proper level is rather tricky and not something I would recommend for most DIYers. If you feel up to doing it, there is at least one thread on this site that tells you how to do it without the special equipment the dealer uses. If you have to tell your tuner what to watch out for, you need a different tuner. The engine and drivetrain can handle 50 more HP. Not sure if your mods will give you that or not. |
These all sound like great upgrades to start! I love the Stillen Gen 3 intake and i'm actually about to install the Z1 High Flow Intake Upgrade Kit so I'll tell ya if its worth it: https://www.z1motorsports.com/air-in...es-p-9199.html
Even though you're only in the 60K range, when I bought my 370Z I flushed every fluid i could think of; just so I know its properly filled and filled with synthetic. Exhaust is a preference, but I didn't see headers or test pipes anywhere? I'm sorry I don't know much about the Stillen pulley or AT cooler. In fact considering its a 7AT I'm not sure if you should do any transmission work - I'm currently going through the CSC mid-life crisis :eekdance: so if it was a manual I'd be reccomending Zspeed - but congrats on the Z man, and good luck with her  |
do AT folks have diff bushing diarrhea problems? if so id check dat first i guess.

Just regularly change your fluids and you should be fine. The Z's engine is tough and reliable if you maintain it.

Thanks for the updates!
I have that feeling to about the Pulley, but my tunner says that part of his job is to manage the proper sync of all elements due pulley needs to take account when you are tuning in the ECU (he speak about someting sync the revs and the and the power of the engine to not over speed the pulley and get melted, but also indicates that thats may happens in FI applications) about the headers, when I bought the exaust i did it buy from headers to the end, including CAT from OEM Nissan Nismo codes. Up to now i still thinking Nimos headers and stock headers are the same. |
Get your self some 4.08 gears in the car and it will really smoke.

My only suggestion would be to swap out the Nismo Exhaust you want for a Fast Intentions exhaust instead. WAY better sound and better gains. Probably much cheaper than a Nismo Exhaust too
Also, I have heard the EcuTek (which is what I have) is slightly better than UpRev. Probably can't see any obvious driving differences but it has more updated software and a few more custom MAPS than UpRev, again could be wrong but I wanted to throw that out there for a good debate. Lastly, not sure why you want a Tranny cooler, totally cool if you get one but i have a lot of Z friends, who track quite often (including myself) that are not FI and their Trannies stay strong. Final thought: if you choose to go Fast Intentions Exhaust (money saved) and not go with the AT Cooler (money saved), use what you saved and get better rotors, pads and Dot4 brake fluid OR instead do sway bars or something suspension wise. Cheers to whatever you choose :) Happy Modding! |
did your car is call Zorro ??

Good advice in the responses already. I would also suggest Limited slip/diff upgrade, tires, and maybe ported plenum + headers if you want to max out the bolt ons. Then on to suspension, brakes, and tires - It only ends when you stop throwing money at the car. ha ha
