Differential Shims?
 

So I searched and I only found a DIY for a 350z differential upgrade. Ours are the same but they never mentioned the use of any shims at all. I want to make sure I have everything I need for the upgrade to a Quaife (QDF13L) from the VLSD, right now I believe have everything but shims. Are these needed, nice to have, or not useful for the install?

I did go through the entire Diff thread and shims were only mentioned once and that just said "call Z1 and find out". Which I did and the guy I was talking too must not have understood what I was asking for because he only sent me the side bearing and seal kit when I wanted the full kit that also replaced the pinion gear bearings. So I ordered the left out parts listed in the diff thread but I am worried I may need shims still.

I'm waiting on OSG LSD and have been researching this like you. The general consesus seems to be that you wait on shims until you measure the backlash. Most people seem to end up not needing them.

Are you installing this yourself? If so you are going to need the proper tools to do the job (dial indicator, mag base, torque wrench, marking compound, ect). If not, your installer should have shims & yes they will be needed. Once in a while the stars will align & they will set up the same, but this is rare at best.

best to have a pro do it, you won't know if you need shims until you crack it open and attempt the install

you'll get a huge price break if you drop the pumpkin yourself and bring it into whichever shop you're using. i think i paid $250 for a quaife installation by dropping the diff myself and bringing in the parts
