How warm to get engine before whippin it?

Hey guys,

I was just wondering how you all treat your engine with regard to warming it up. My usual routine is get in the car and let it idle for about 30 seconds until the RPMs drop to a steady state.

Then I drive like grandma for about 10 minutes until we get to ~150-160, keeping all shifts below 4K.

Then I start driving a bit more spiritedly until we are at 180, at which point I'm shifting around 6-6.5K rpm.

I tend to drive spiritedly everywhere (without being obnoxious). I probably come close to redline at least once a day (especially on freeway merges).

How hot do you let things get before really punching it?

At least to the second dot for me.

You're pretty much on track with most people here. Didn't need to start a new thread though :twocents:

This is how I treat me engine

You do the same as me.. Probably what other people do aswell. Just wait about 5 minutes when I get in the car, hook up the bluetooth to my phone, find a song to play, stall my self before I drive to heat up the car abit then i'm off.

If we all lived in Florida where the cars warm up a bit quicker, we'd all probably do like you. But some of us unfortunately live in colder climate where the oil is a bit cold affecting cold start viscosity.

I usually wait until the oil temp is at least 180. When below it is 3500rpm max shifts.

What you described above is very conservative and safe. All I can say is.... just keep it up!!
