Shifting when spirited driving(race sometimes)

So im new to manual i get the launching part on first gear but that second gear always gets me my car jerks like hell when i try to shift fast at 7k rpms, so i wanted to know what do you guys do, dump clutch on 2nd 3rd nd 4th or try shift fast without dumping clutch thank you. Im new to the manual world id you didnt figure out yet

Elmo370z 03-08-2016 01:29 AM

Redline that ************ every every chance, every gear you can!

Nah don't listen to me, I drink too much and lost my clutching leg to a badger coupla years back.

King14 03-08-2016 08:24 PM

Thats why i was asking why other people do haha

I say drive a few thousand miles first before you try to be a racer. You need to be able to just shift wot thinking before you can do it fast. Do it wrong and bye bye Trans or engine from over Rev.

Just go drive for no other reason than to drive and you'll learn :)

Get to where you can shift smoothly slowly, then start working on doing it faster.

:iagree: walk before you run... the engagement is high and narrow on these cars with lots of dead space below the friction point. Don't stomp it to the floor and fling it back up thru the dead space or you will jerk badly. Use most of the dead space when you are learning in normal driving so you don't slip the clutch too much and burn your clutch out. You need to learn where the friction point is and not go too far past it when shifting aggressively. The timing has to be perfect at high rpm so you don't burn your clutch out. Pulling into the next gear with your hand and changing pedal direction at the friction point need to be synced well (within fractions of a second). Have patience and don't rush things... the 1-2 shift is the hardest to master and in normal driving you need to slip a little slower and let the rpm drop. With the clutch in try hesitating a half a second longer before you let the clutch out when doing the 1-2 at normal speeds.

Yea i been kind of trying to rush it a bit. I feel like i havent improved since i got the car haha because the second gear is really hard. my CSC failed on me at like 4k miles my engagement point is lower then it was when i bought it. Thanks though im gonna cool down on the smashing till i get better in normal driving.

99% of the time the transmission will be fine, it's really only the csc and mc that you need to worry about
