Buying a 7AT transmission 4-5 slipping

So I went to the transmission shop down the road and got told it's 10 thousand for a new one. I was wondering what's the best route of action. Right now I'm thinking used. It's slipping pretty bad at the moment, and low mpg and low power.

Am I reading this right? $10,000?

JWillis72 02-08-2016 05:34 PM

There has to be a cheaper way to rebuild it, level 10s bulletproof 1000 HP trans doesn't cost $1000.

That's what I was thinking. You can get the last transmission you ever needed for $4k.

TerribleONE 02-08-2016 05:44 PM

They are trying to rip you off.

Z-Girl 12 02-08-2016 06:46 PM

Trade it

gbrettin 02-08-2016 10:03 PM

According to Level 10's web site the transmission costs about 4,500. I'm getting a quote from them tomorrow so I will let you know for sure.

I'd tell them to eat a bag of d1cks if they told me 10g.

Well they said they'd install a used one for $700 with fluid. I don't know if that's a great deal.

Edit: $700 for just labor

Can't you buy a racing auto transmission for cheaper? I really don't know what brand of transmission it is.. But I think I remember reading somewhere that someone makes an aftermarket auto trans for our cars.

harman.khinda 02-08-2016 10:23 PM

Could I get someone's opinion on this:
http://m.ebay.com/itm/2013-NISSAN-37...613?nav=SEARCH

Will it fit? It's got a 90 day warranty. Can a regular transmission shop do the fluid swap or is it a dealer only thing?

gbrettin 02-08-2016 10:28 PM

It says the trans is from a 370z so it should be fine. I'm guessing you drive your car "spirited" which is why your transmission is going out. If that's the case then you should consider getting a built transmission. If you have 150k+ from normal driving then I'd say yeah, the used 21k transmission might not be a bad idea.

harman.khinda 02-08-2016 10:38 PM

Would a regular shop have the equipment to do the transmission fluid change? A system capable of reading the transmission fluid temp. It looked all new stuff in there but I have to wait till the morning to ask them.

I'd think it depends on the shop but probably not. I believe the OTD price that I paid for a transmission flush through Nissan was about 200 bucks.

I also got quoted 10k (from the dealership) for a new stock transmission and went with Level 10 last year. Best decision I ever made.

How long have you had it? Anything else you want to add about it would be much appreciated.

StillenZ84 02-08-2016 11:50 PM

I have had it since September. I paid right under 5k. They have you send in your transmission and completely rebuild it. Shipping takes 2-3 days one way depending on where you live, takes them right at 3 days to rebuild it and then they send it back. My car was down a total of 8 days. It is built to withstand either 700 hp or like JWillis 1000 hp which obviously cost a little more. I can tell a noticeable difference in how fast and firm it shifts. Much better deal than just going back with the stock transmission that cost more and could end up breaking again.

4-5 gear slipping is mainly the valve body problem. I helped 3 people locally to order the valve body upgrade from Level Ten already.

I dive my 7AT very "spirited" every time I get in the car.. I have never had any issues what so ever..

This is going to become the 6MT CSC page soon...

I second everyone who stated Level 10. These guys do great transmission work for our 5A/T and 7A/T platforms. I've been tracking their "bulletproof" transmission for a while now with 500awhp without any problems.

I must confess it was my mistake and not the manufacturers. The car was on jack stands and I was testing for exhaust rattle by revving the engine in drive. I had my hand on the brake pretty firm and I put in park before the revs dropped all the way down and the tranny (parking mechanism?) went *click click click* and the issue has been getting worse since then. This happened at 30k I think and am now at 89k

That suck but we all make mistakes, you should call level 10 and explain that to them. They may be able to tell you what it damaged and what it will take to fix it.
