Random starting problems?

Do any of you guys have random start up issues? My car seems to randomly struggle to start and when this happens the tach needle will get stuck at the 6 o'clock position until I give it a few revs. This start up issue usually happens for about 2-3 start cycles until it goes back to starting up normally and then it will randomly come back. The first time this happened it left me stranded because I killed the battery trying to crank it. I charged the battery and the volt gauge reads around 14-15 so im not sure its that. Could it be a sensor going bad? Any help would be much appreciated!!

Have the battery tested to make sure it's holding a good charge. You can also try a battery dis-connect to reset the system. Disconnect your negative terminal for about 5 to 10 minutes to see if this helps. Are you getting any dash lights (Codes)?

No dash light codes but ill try and reset it with the battery terminal.

Every now and then i have start up issues too. It feels like its very weak in cranking the engine then gives up and stops. I start it again with a tap on the accelerator and its fine. Cars runs beautifully after. Whats even more weird is that this was constant in both my Z's AND my 2011 Infiniti FX35. Because it is so consistent and all cars have new batteries i doubt its a battery issue (as long as we are talking the same issue). I gave up taking it to the dealerships because they can never duplicate it. Never really causes me issues and i just live with it. no performance issues, gas issues or anything. usually happens once every few weeks

Future recall....?

Dam that sucks. I also don't think its the battery but maybe a faulty sensor? I read something about the crank positioning sensor being bad on this car but its not a cheap sensor(160) to just buy and see if it fixes the problem.

Do you have an aftermarket flywheel if so which one. The tach issue makes me think it is indeed a cps or ckps sensor issue. Some aftermarket flywheels can wipe out the tip of the crank sensor. Try pulling the cam and crank sensors and cleaning the tips of them the crank is behing one of the heads down by the trans and the two cam sensors are the little black plastic ones on the front covers. See if they are damaged or covered in crap.

Don't know if it would help but most of the Nissan that I have worked on have engine ground wire issues as they grow older due to corrosion. Firstly I would recommend that you make sure your battery connections are super clean and tight once you put them back on. Ground wires can easily be removed all corrosion sanded away and reinstalled. If your voltmeter is reading over 14.4 volts your alternator is over charging which will damage your battery and other components. The connections to the starter itself should be checked cleaned and tightened. It's a bit of work but all of it fairly easy prior to shelling out big bucks for batteries etc. Hope you find it soon.

Need help. Car just will not start after driving to the shop. After depressing clutch engine will not turn over. 6spd MT, no modifications. Checked the battery, no warning lights. Checked steering lock problem. No issues because fuse has been pulled out. So had it towed home. Checked fuses:- in the engine and passenger footwell, all ok. Running out of ideas...

Dirty MAF or defective clutch pedal position switch?

geddit 12-22-2019 04:21 AM

Thanks Axmea. Will try to look into that route

Try hitting starter motor with a hammer but not too hard.
This will loosen brush contacts if that's the issue.
Also make sure car acknowledges clutch is pressed in.
Look up service manual for trouble shooting no crank fault. And check it's not a fob flat battery.
