OS Giken LSD - What's needed for install

First I've read numerous threads on here about what it takes to install one of these and yet can't seem to find a definitive description of what needs done to the make it fit properly.

Originally the car had the VLSD and currently has a Quaife installed (version of Quaife requiring base model stub axle). I'm just trying to figure out what my shop is going to need to do in order to get the OSG installed. I know I've seen more than once that some machining is required on the stub shaft but never what was actually done (ie. mill location "x" down by 2mm or turn shaft down by 1.5mm). I'm just trying to make sure that my shop has all the information to install this correctly and efficiently.

Also, anyone have any idea on how long the install takes?

Quaife wasn't good enough for yah huh?

Are you doing drifting events or why the need to upgrade your upgraded diff.

Autox. Just can't keep the inside rear tire loaded through some of the corners and as a result can't get the power down. As a result of this the car is a little unpredictable since once the inside rear hooks the car lunges foward. Probably costing .5 to 1 sec on a ~60 sec course.

I was thinking about doing this as my next big mod (ASP is a b1tch to run in with a 370Z, isn't it? hah). Gonna do a little research as well. Definitely have had issues with the inside tire doing long smokey burnouts coming out of sharp turns.

Yeah ASP definitely isn't the easiest class out there. I never really noticed how bad the problem was until yesterday when I had Matt Braun (multi-time national champ) co-drive and proceeded to watch the inside rear just burn itself off on nearly every turn.

I was actually rather surprised how competitive the car actually was given the diff, the overly aggressive brake pads, and general lack of full prep for the class (probably only 80-90% rulebook build so far).

anyone?

Sorry bud, the only people that know differentials and have good customer service is Z1.

there's quite a few people on the board here with the OSG LSD. based on my own knowledge of owning a VLSD equipped car, if you have a quaife that required you to buy another driver side (short) stub axle, then you have everything you need for the OSG. that means, you have 2 short stub axles (our VLSD's came with 1 short, 1 long stub axle). simply swap, replace bearings and seals.

Just to clarify with respect to the installation issues. We're very familiar with Nissan's habit of using different length and shaped stub axles in the various trims of 350Z. With the 370Z, the base model includes traction control but still an open differential. In the process they also elected to use a revised set of stub axles as well. So with 6 different stub axle choices even OS Giken wasn't entirely sure what ones to use. We ordered one short and one long axle in preparation for the installation. Upon inspection of the OEM parts we discovered that we need two SHORT stub axles NON TAPER with snap ring grooves/snap rings. Instead of sending Chris home and ordering a second short stub axle we machined and modified his existing axle to precisely the same measurements and tolerances of the OEM part which including machining a new snap ring groove. This is a substantial amount of extra time, but we didn't charge the customer of any of this and our objective was to complete the job as promised and get him on the road safely. Under normal circumstances no modifications are needed during install. Mission accomplished.

Hi everyone, sorry for pulling this out of the ashes, but I figure it's better to update this thread than to open yet another new one.

After reading through the forums, I figured that OS GIKEN is the LSD I want to install in my car. I have a fully loaded 370z which comes with the VLSD from factory. From what I gather online, if I want this OS Giken installed, I need to buy the shorter halfshaft flange as well - namely part number: 38220-JK01B

Is there anything else I need? I read about some washers etc - these I figure are good to change, although I have 15k miles on my car.

Anything else? Is the shaft change plug'n'play? I was thinking of doing the change myself, as it seems that I "only" need to change the final drive gear to the LSD, and reinstall everything back. Am I missing something? I'm more of a weekend mechanic so any tips and/or advice are greatly appreciated.

Probably should swap the side bearings and stub seals while you’re in there. And you’ll want to have to tools to check backlash and preload. Also, I’ve heard it’s best to have a couple different sizes of the shims ready to go so you can do the swap quickly without waiting for different sizes to be delivered.

I guess if you could verify that the OSG diff (including side bearings) was the exact same width as the VLSD diff (including side bearings) that you’re removing, it would be simply remove and replace and use the shims that came in your diff. Probably not that easy though… I’d still check preload/backlash.
