Does it just happen to me? (Running out of fuel)
So its happened twice now and I am sure you’re all thinking I am just an idiot. However, my daily work commute is a mere 7 km and on the way home sometimes I drop off a friend and this adds 1.2km to the journey. On both occasions I have had 100 km range according to the trip computer and I know this is measured on your driving style and usage so far etc etc. On the gauge there is a full ¼ tank.
After dropping off my friend, lets say I’ve driven with a heavy right foot, (in manual mode) for about 4-5 km, literally no more, The car has cut on me and will not start again. I’ve had the car from new and I remember one time when I literally had no range and all the dots had gone from gauge, I still managed to get to a petrol station which was 2 km away. Is there something wrong with the fuel tank or do I just have to fill up at ¼ tank and literally not go above 2,000 revs? Your thoughts? |
Somethings wrong with your car. I dont have any knowledge based on stuff like this,
But it would be something where your car is reading more fuel than there is. I drive with below 1/4 tank all the time. LOL you are from dubai, ME TOO Just noticed. 1/4 tank is a lot of fuel. Point is , 1/4 Tank = More than 50 Kms even if WOT |
Hey Leroy!
Yup in Dubai too! Thanks for your feedback dude. I think there is something wrong for sure. |
Hey Ketan,
The 370z has won the award for the dumbest fuel tank design of the 21st century. Long story short, you're going to have to live with not letting your fuel get to 1/4th of your tank. Try taking your car to the Autodrome and see what happens below 3/4th on tight right handers. Sam |
If you have a quarter tank of gas left. Drive with a heavy foot, and took a hard right hand turn. Sounds like you're getting fuel starve. Two choices. Live with it, and keep your tank filled up. Or get phunk's RRP fuel pump kit.
The other thing that might be happening. One of the fuel level sensors in the tank is bad. Trip to dealer to fix. |
Sounds like fuel starve to me. Search and you will find tons of threads on this subject.
|
Ahhhh! This makes so much sense now, especially the fact that when I was running low and took the same corner at speed and it decided to die at the same exact spot!
Thanks guys - officially the dumbest fuel tank ever. |
I don't get it. You live in a rich oil country and you don't feel up your Z??
And then you accuse the Z with the dumbest fuel tank? Lol I knew it even the sheiks could no longer pay their Ferrari's too due to low cost of oil barrel in the market! Just kidding you. But come on man fill up and problem solved. Fuel starvation is very common with our Z. |
2000 rpms? Take it somewhere to get looked at. Maybe it's as simple as replacing a faulty sensor.:ugh2: you could try and reset the ecu,see if that works.
|
This seems to be an issue Nissan needs to address. My fuel gage went from 5 dots to no dots in a course of 10 miles or less and I'm thinking I am about out of fuel. I gas up and can only get 14 to 15 gallons. Took my Z to the dealer with a half tank and told them the issue but they didn't drive it far enough. I told the service manager to take my z home and put some miles on it to get to the 5 dot mark and he would see what I was talking about. The next day I get a call and it did the same thing again. The sensors were off voltage wise and both were replaced.
If you get your sensors replaced I believe your running out of fuel issue will be resolved. I have had no issues since and when my Z shows no dots I have right at one gallon of fuel remaining. |
It's strange, many of you seem to have a problem with gas tank after 1/4, I can usually push her pretty far after this and experience virtually no dot jumping, even with spirited driving:driving:
Perhaps i'm a lucky one, however gas tank sensors I wouldn't doubt are crap and if possible you can pull it off with your dealer a replacement it sounds should do justice |
Don't feel bad. I had the same issue with oil. Was slightly low (which I didn't realize) and hammered it going around a turn. Went into limp mode.
Most expensive quart of oil I ever bought. Didn't realize that I could have fixed it myself by detaching the battery cable for awhile. |

It may be a bad sending unit, I've gone through a few for doing the same thing, all of a sudden no gas, as a matter of fact I had 1 LED on and the car ran out just the other day, I could SEE the damn gas station. I've had it run out with 4 bars as well...Just don't let it get below 1/4 and watch the mileage, which is what i'm doing again.

Where he lives and how much fuel costs is irrelevant to this discussion. The problem is manufacturers selling us 'sports' cars without a surge tank in the fuel tank and without baffled oil pans.
This is a problem on the EVO Xs as well when youre tracking your car and generating any major cornering forces below 1/2 tank of gas. If it only happens at 1/4 tank and below on the Z, that's not THAT bad compared to other manufacturers but still unacceptable and unsafe on the track. OP, add a 2nd fuel pump and surge tank to solve the fuel starvation issue. |
We do have a surge tank though. Granted it's extremely small but the fuel pump does sit in a tank of its own fuel. Also I read here someone quoting the designer of the Z it was never fully meant to be a sports car, just a sporty car. Hence the poor brake pads that overheat and fail, no factory oil cooler until 2012, rear differentials that can overheat and blow up, fuel starve etc. etc.
|
The Z is engineered and sold as a street car. When you put it on the track expect to do a few changes to the above mentioned issues and problem solved.

Only 1% of Z buyers probably track their Z on a regular basis. |

Totally agree... Also, I am sure some want everything on the Z, but will complain when they see the price increase. You get what you pay for.

It is 4 am and I can't sleep, things like this is what keeps me awake :icon18: |
Happened again, 3 dots, no fuel picking up, and a dead car on side of highway. When I did get the car to a gas station I still had about 2 gal in the tank. I've run it lower then that before. PISSED me off!
|
Me at track on sunday: Helmet check, gloves check, traction control off check, no less than 2 dots on fuel gauge unlit-OH SH!T.
Needless to say with just 3 dots not lit up on the fuel gauge, I could barely make it around the track, fuel starving in every right hander on the track. Completely ruined my third session. I would like to take someone from Nissan and shove them inside our fuel tank. |
1/2 tank of fuel or more....check

I wonder if the engineers at Nissan are clueless to this fact or if they just decided it's not worth the investment to fix it.
